How do you restore system volume information?

Hi there,

Still new things to things. So would greatly appreciate your help. I Just wondered how to restore system volume information drive? I had malware stored in that drive (c:/system volume information). I was told to clear it and I had to restore it but dont know how to do it.

I have Windows XP.

Thanks

I'm not fully sure that I'm following your question....

It sounds to me like you're asking about the System Restore feature.

You can turn it on, or turn it off... but that's all you can do to it.

when you turn it off, all information there is erased.

when you turn it back on, it starts fresh... you can't put back anything.

you can check the current status of system restore as follows:

on your desktop, RIGHT-click on the MY COMPUTER icon

select PROPERTIES

click on the SYSTEM RESTORE tab

there's a box in front of the words "Turn off system restore"

if the box is checked, system restore is OFF

if the box is NOT checked, system restore is ON

Lesac, as ky331 explained, when you turn System Restore off, the Restore Points (including any infected ones) are erased.

You are simply flushing System Restore, and by turning System Restore on again, you are starting fresh and creating a new, clean Restore Point.

It might be good to run a follow-up scan with whatever scanner found the problem to begin with -- just to confirm that the entire system is clean.

**Note: You will need to reboot between turning SR off and on again.
Here are the steps:
To flush the XP System Restore Points:
(Using XP, you must be logged in as Administrator to do this.)
Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.
When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.
Check the box labeled Turn Off System Restore.

Reboot. Go back in and turn System Restore ON. A new Restore Point will be created.
