Internet Explorer: Web Page Unavailable While Offline Error

I am running on windows 98, and my ISP is AOL.  I do not use Internet Explorer, and do not want to use Internet Explorer.  While I'm online with AOL, I get multiple Internet Explorer Pop Up windows.  In addition, when I am offline, I get a pop up window stating "Web Page Unavailable while Offline.  The web page you requiested is not available offline.  To view this page, click connect"  Then there are two buttons, "Connect" or "Stay Offline".  The problem is, I am not attempting to get online at all.  These windows seem to pop up randomly, whenever they see fit.  I have downloaded and run both AdAware SE and Spybot.  The pop-up ads while online I can deal with, or work around with a pop up blocker, but I do not understand AT ALL where this error window is popping up from while I am offline, and not attempting to connect.  Any thoughts?  Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.  Thanks!

you've got spyware or a trojan on the system

try running counterspy - you can get a 15 day trial from it - www.sunbelt-software.com

and try running trojan hunter too - www.trojanhunter.com

or run a complete virus scan from trendmicro - http://housecall.trendmicro.com

other than that you can go through add/remove programs and research/remove any programs that you don't know

and you can try going under tools - manage add-ons in Internet Explorer and remove any unknown or damaged items from there

Both of these are "Free-Trials".  How do you avoid paying full price for them?
