JS/Nezew Trojan detected by McAfee - Can't delete

McAfee just detected a Trojan called JS/Nezew which has something to do with java. I tried to delete it but it said the trojan couldn't be deleted and that I would have to restart my computer and use a rescue disk.

1) If I use a rescue disk, will it wipe out everything I have added in the past year?

I spent about an hour reading about trojan removal tools and decided the programs might cause more problems. This is the first virus/trojan I've ever had. Bought this PC new 1 year ago. Running Windows XP, Intel Pentium 4.

2) Is there a way to get rid of this trojan without downloading anything or wiping out my custom settings and documents?

3) If I leave the trojan on my computer what will it do?

It needs to be deleted its will play havoc with your system.

Here we go:
Go to http://www.trendmicro.com/en/home/us/enterprise.htm and do an online scan and delete whatever it finds. Be sure to highlight the drives you want to have searched.
After that could you please go to http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html and download AdAwareSE and delete what it finds. Then while using AdAware, click on add-ons and get their plug-in for the VX2 variant, and run that and delete what it finds.
After that go to http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html
and download SpyBot and run that and delete what it finds.
Now go to
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html and download HiJackThis to its own folder that you create on your C:\ drive.
After it is downloaded open the program and click Scan and Save to log.

Post the log that it generates here.

Thanks for replying so fast. I am running the trendmicro scan right now, but have to leave for work in an hour. I will have to run the other programs you listed tonight. Is it safe to shut down my computer while I'm away?

Update to first post:

I found out about the trojan via a pop up from McAfee, after I clicked on a weblink. I ran a virus scan with McAfee and it didn't detect the trojan. Next, I ran the trendmicro/housecalls scan online and it didn't detect anything either. I also ran a disc clean up as suggested in the Dell FAQs. Does anyone know why the Trojan isn't showing up in the scans? I still need to know if it's safe to shut off my computer without taking any action on the trojan.

Update:

1) Ran Disk Cleanup
2) Ran Symantic Online Scan - Found Nothing
3) Ran Trendmicro/housecalls Scan - Found Nothing
4) Ran McAfee Virus Scan - Found nothing
5) Went to majorgeeks.com and followed their instructions (turned off System Restore, allowed hidden files and extentions to be visible, ran the above scans again) - Found nothing
6) Downloaded CC Cleaner and ran it. (It removed 119MB of stuff).
7)) Downloaded AdAware SE and the plug in, checked for updates. Ran the scan. It found 2 cookies it didn't like from Blue Mountain.
8) Downloaded Spybot and this: Spybot - Search and Destroy DSO Exploit Fix - checked for updates and ran the scan. Spybot also found the 2 cookies from Bluemountain but it also didn't like the DSO Exploit above. It had 5 listings for the DSO and showed a picture of a crumbling wall next to it. So I removed the DSO and the cookies from BlueMountain.
9) I ran the Windows online trojan scan - Found Nothing
10) Sent an email with attachment to a friend who has several virus/trojan detectors in place, and he told me he scanned it several times and found nothing.

None of these programs have been able to find this trojan that McAfee said I had.  I'm wondering if I really have it? Are there any other free programs I can use to find it?

At this point I would still like you to post your HJT log.

Hey Steve,

Were you able to find out anything from the log I posted above? There are no apparent problems with my computer; everything is operating as normal, but I would still like to know if I really have this trojan and if so, how to remove it.

Thanks,

Melissa

Melissa,

Can you post back the full name of the virus file that can't be removed. Here's the only things that I see right off...

Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/06d89e8e5bacda625a18/netzip/RdxIE601.cab

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click " Fix checked".

Post back a new log.

Melissa,

You'll need to do both. The virus, from what I can gather, is java based. So it was probably found in Java's cache - and if it was, clearing the cache should remove it. The hjt items are mostly cleanup, except for the ActiveX (the last entry).

I found the java cache. There's nothing in it, but I'll clear it anyway.

Mike it's not a virus. It's a Trojan and the name that McAfee called it was JS/nezew. That's all I know. It hasn't done any damage to my computer that I'm aware of. Everything runs normally.

Melissa,

Your absolutely correct. This is where I gathered the info on it from: http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_100682.htm.

Hi Mike,

Can you please clarify if I need to do both things you suggested in both posts? Or just the last one?

The trojan title is in my original post to this thread. The only time I ever saw its name was when the McAfee bubble popped up while I was online. When I attempted to delete it from McAfee, I got a message saying that it can't be deleted or quarentined...but then it disappeared and I never saw it again.
