LSASS.EXE - Application Error during bootup process

LSASS.EXE - Application Error???

I've had this pop up on my PC and don't know how to fix it.

I get this when I'm getting ready to log in to my Windows XP operating system. Right before the 'log on screen w/the users this pops up'.

"lsass.exe - application error

The application failed to initialize (xxx xxxxxxx)
Click OK to terminate"

If I click OK it just gives me a black screen w/my mouse. That's it. It happens over and over again no matter what I try.

Any suggestions are appreciated. I just replaced my video card and now this... :(

I have a Dimension 8200.

Thanks,
Eric

try to boot into safemode (or last known good configuration) using F8 at boot, and as soon as you get into windows i would suggest you run a virusscan.
if no viruses are found, click Start/Run & type "SFC /scannow" (without quotes).
this will run the system file checker, which should locate the error with LSASS.EXE and replace it with a copy from your OS reinstall CD.
