My Home Page is being overridden

Just recently the following URL has been overriding my pre-set homepage preference: res://mshp.dll/index.html#10213.  How do I stop this?!!

Also, how do I clear the home page drop down box on the Internet Options window which contains a list of URLs?  When I first bought my machine, I could clear the History and this box would clear.  But now nothing clears the URLs in this drop down box!

Finally, my google search is being overridden by the following URL which imitates the google page format: http://search-company.com/search...  I can click it off so it appears to be some type of pop-up but it is incredibly annoying.  How do I get rid of this?

Thank you to anyone who can help me!!

It sounds like you have a homepage hijacker and probably other spyware and parasites as well.  First try Ad-Aware and Spybot that can be downloaded from the links in the message from Chris at the top of this forum:

This happened to me and was resolved.

Please go to: http://www.tek-tips.com/gviewthread.cfm/lev2/67/lev3/74/pid/608/qid/738925

And also: http://www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?SQID=739067&SPID=608&page=1

Basic steps are:

Download, update within each program and run these three troubleshooting tools, in the order given:

. cwshredder
. SpyBot
. AdAware

Reboot.  Test to see if your IE or other browser or mail client issues have been resolved.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

MIKE

Read the links below to have a safer Internet experience in 2004.
I recommend IE-SPYAD and SpywareBlaster available in these links.

Hi, I had the exact problem you had, except the numbers in the homepage address were different. I could not peranently re-set my internet explorer home page. I first posted the problem in the Windows XP board, and I was referred to this board. My forum name is wyovaruss, so you could find the first post in that forum and then the two subsequent posts in this board.

In any event, what I did was per "Yellowhammer's" suggestion and that was to downolad the "Hijackthis" scanning program (Ad-Aware did not fix the problem by the way) and post it on the Virus board as a new thread, per the forum regular's suggestion. It was looked at and then I was advised to download "Coolware Shredder" which is a scanning/fix program, run it, then post the scan again. The Coolware Shredder program got rid of 5 "objects" but another thing was also in there that I was told to also delete.

What you have is an "hijack homepage" worm, virus, or whatever it is.

I also downloaded a patch from Microsoft, either "service pack 1 or 1a, I can't recall.

Just thought I'd let you know what the issue and the easy fix was. The forum regulars are a great help. Thanks to everyone out there!
