Did it start happening after a recent Spybot SD cleaning? The same happened to me after Spybot SD removed an entry called VX2/f. See link to my post below. I'm trying to figure out if it can be fixed.

I recently experienced the same problem/symptom on my DELL 8300. It happened after I download an update to Spybot-Search & Destroy. After installing the update, I scan the computer for problems. Spybot identified "VX2 /f" (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Vendor). I of course ran the "fix" and removed this registry entry. After reading many comments on the forum about NotifyAlert.exe, I decided to undo the "fix" using Spybot’s restore feature. That fixed the problem. Good luck to all who have the same problem and I hope this helps...

BoJingle,
I found out that is a known bug for Spybot SD, it incorrectly flags a registry entry for deletion. For now, scan with Spybot and when it detects it, mark it to be Ignored. That should fix the problem until a Spybot update is released.

I experienced similar problems after installing Spybot SD last month. However, restoring the "VX2 /f" file did not help. As some have also noted, I am not able to delete "Dell Support" by using the add/remove program utility.
So, I tried renaming certain files and folders (as suggested by web sites other than Dell Forums). Thus far (one week), the NotifyAlert.exe gremlins have not returned. I am keeping a list of the renamed files/folders just in case these changes might trigger some other problems.
Dell Support just sent me a survey to rate by Customer Support experience regarding this problem. The support tech was sincere, but totally clueless.
