Noton Anti-Virus 2005 has some serious installation and activation problems

I have been on the phone with Symantec (in India) Tech Support for at least 12 hours in the past week.

I have been trying to install and activate Norton AntVirus 2005.  I had been running NAV2001 until it was no longer supported (by Symantec) on my Dimension 4100 / 1GHz PIII /WinME computer. ( No operating system nor hardware modifications since purchased ).

The software installs (must remove NAV2001...big mistake!!) okay, but it never will Configure, Activate, nor Operate correctly.  It always thinks that the "Trial Period Has Expired".  It shouldn't even have a trial period!!!  It will not communicate via the Internet (ie Live Update or Registration).  It will not Activate over the Internet, but will manually (by Phone), but once you reboot or try a Live Update, it still thinks the Trial Period Has Expired".

Symantec has had me uninstall-reinstall it about 20 times and have run scripts, patches, and fixes.  I have also deleted Registry entries on 2 occasions.

We still have had the same disappointing results.

They finally requested that I get a replacement of the CD.  Will this be resolved in 7 to 10 business days.

My money says it won't.

Be Aware ...  Anyone have a similar problem?

Earlier this year I tried installing Norton Anti-Virus 2004 trialware on an older system running Windows 2000.  After installation, I ran a complete scan and no viruses were detected.  However problems arose after restarting the system as instructed by the Norton antivirus software.  The computer could not even reach the log-in screen.  I ended up reformating the drive and reinstalling everything.  Thank God for backups!  I emailed Norton for a response, but they never replied.  So I'm never trusting Norton again.  Good luck on your problem though.

BTW, I'm using McAfee VirusScan 8.0, but I'm also experiencing a problem in obtaining the 1-year DAT renewal via the on-line store and the call-in phone number.  So I posted a question to see if anyone else is experiencing the same problem.

I just recently installed NSW 2005 on my Dell 8200 Win XP and everything went incredibly smooth.  However, I did remove manually NSW 2002, as suggested in the instructions manual and at the Symantec website, restarted the computer after removal, then I defragmented the HD and then proceeded on with the installation. In less than 15 minutes NSW 2005 had fully installed, registered and activated itself.  Then it updated itself and it was done.  Finally I did a full scan and I was done. So far so good.

I have noticed, though, that NSW 2005 loads slighltly slower than my previous version.

Uninstalling NAV 2001 from a Win ME computer is cumbersome (consider moving up to XP it is worthy), instructions (you might already have seen them) are given in:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/sunset-c2001kb.nsf/bdbc41a328fbd50485256ee60052db7e/403e5b2cc382c7e285256edd00465029?OpenDocument&src=bar_sch_nam

Over the past years, I have learned to follow instructions very strictly from the manufacturer when it comes to installing and uninstalling software. I hope you will resolve your problem.

Thank you for the info.  Once again, it is a difficult resolution to a problem that shouldn't have a occurred in the first place.

I followed directions of an "Uninstall", but you have enlightnened me that it requires more.  Not smart for a casual user.  I have retired from "IT", and want simple and easy now.  I have been learning Central Asian English for at least 12 hours.  They do try hard, although hard for a Texan to understand.

I was replacing NAV2001 becuase it is no longer supported.  I have no problem with the support part, but Symantec should have an easy solution (support the products or upgrade easily).

It is very sad to see that Symantec could care less about its users and subsribers.  I have worked with Nortons AntiVirus for 15 years, thought it stunk then, and still think it is a poor product now.  I was always a fan of MacAfee, but it seems that they have droppred off the face of this Earth.

Software to prevent problems shouldn't be one themselves.  But with improved technology and fast upgrading software, I guess this is the norm.

Hope the new CD works ..... time will tell.  Thanks again.

It is definitely a problem with Norton Anti Virus. Same promblems with new CD.
It will not Activate.  "Trial Period Has Expired" or the "Product Key is Invalid". It fails to communicate through the Internet in the activation process.

Dell Dimension 4100
Pentium 3 - 1 GHz
Windows ME
Directly cabled into a Wireless Router, hooked into a DSL Modem.
I was replacing NAV2001.
No operating system modifications other than Windows security updates.
So if you have a similar system, consider MacAfee instead.:smileymad:
