Popups announcing spyware and registry problems

I have suddenly started getting multiple popup notices warning me that I'm infected with spyware and to update some program I do not have (pay to do so) to get rid of it.  Alternately, it warns me that System Integrity Scan Wizard has found my registry in trouble.

Spyware Doctor found some junk and deleted it, but it's still happening.   Just now, I got a notice from "Security System - Protection Control Panel" telling me I need to update PC-Antispyware to remove "trojandownloader.xs"

This is my High Jack Log:

Welcome. Thank you for using Dell Community Forums.
I am reviewing your log.
In the meantime, you can help me by doing the following:

* Have you have posted this issue on another forum? If so, please provide a link to the topic.

* If you are using any cracked software, please remove it.
Definition of cracked software:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_cracking

* If you are using any P2P (file sharing) programs, please remove them before we clean your computer.
The nature of such software and the high incidence of malware in files downloaded with them is counter productive to restoring your PC to a healthy state.
A list of P2P's is here: http://www.castlecops.com/t204179-P2P_programs_we_ask_that_you_remove_first.html

* If this computer belongs to someone else, do you have authority to apply the fixes we will use?

* Have you already fixed entries using HijackThis? If so, please restore all the backups and then post another log.

* After we begin working, please print or copy all instructions to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out procedures.
Please follow all instructions in sequence. Do not, on your own, install/re-install any programs or run any fixes or scanners that you have not been instructed to use because this may cause conflicts with the tools that I am using.

** We may be using some specialized tools during our fix. Certain embedded files that are part of legitimate programs or specialized fix tools such as process.exe, restart.exe, SmiUpdate.exe, reboot.exe, ws2fix.exe, prcviewer.exe and nircmd.exe may at times be detected by some anti-virus/anti-malware scanners as a "RiskTool", "Hacking tool", "Potentially unwanted tool", or even "malware (virus/trojan)" when that is not the case.
Such programs have legitimate uses in contexts where an authorized user or administrator has knowingly installed it. These detections do not necessarily mean the file is malware or a bad program. It means it has the potential for being misused by others. Anti-virus scanners cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert you or even automatically remove them.

* If your replies do not fit in one post while we are handling your issue, please reply to yourself until all text is submitted. It may take several posts.

We will need to disable Spyware Doctor during our fix. To disable Spyware Doctor from running on your system startup:
1. First, disable the OnGuard Tools. This way, when you exit Spyware Doctor, these tools won't stay resident in the background.
2. Click the "Settings" button on the left side.
3. Click the "Startup Settings" link.
4. Uncheck "Run at Windows Startup".
5. Click the "Apply" button.
Exit by a right-click on the "Spyware Doctor" icon in the system tray and choose "Exit".
[To enable Spyware Doctor when you are finished, open the program, Settings>Startup Settings> CHECK "Run at Windows Startup">APPLY
Exit. Reboot.]

To disable PCTools Browser Monitor: If you are running Internet Explorer, click Tools > Manage Add-ons. If PCTools Browser Monitor is on the list, click it & select Disable. You will need to restart your browser after making the change.

I look forward to your reply.

Thank you for responding.

I have not posted this question on another forum.
I am not in possession of any cracked software.
I have no P2P programs that I am aware of.
I own the computer and am the sole user.
I have not fixed anything with HijackThis, only run the log.

Since posting, I had rerun my Trend Micro PC-cillin.   It has removed some but I think it has all returned.   Most it found it could not or would not remove or quarantine.

I will not run anything else until told to.

Spyware Doctor - I disabled OnGuard Tools, after clicking on the "settings" button, I could not find a "startup settings" link.  I could not find "run at windows startup" to uncheck.
I disabled the browser guard and startup guard and onguard popup as part of the disabling.

I did not find PCTools Browser Monitor under "manage add-ons"  but it did mention Spyware Doctor being disabled.

Should I disable Trend Micro PC-cillin, Spybot Teatimer or Windows Defender?

Thank you very much for your help.

You can leave PC-Cillin running, but please disable Defender:

* Open Microsoft Windows Defender. Click Start, Programs, Windows Defender
* Click on Tools, General Settings
* Under Real-time protection options, deselect the Turn on real-time protection check box
* Click Save

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Now we will take care of TeaTimer:

Right click the running icon of Spybot's TeaTimer, and choose Exit SpyBot S&D - Resident'.

While both TeaTimer and SpyBot are closed:
Download ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer (and preventing TeaTimer from restoring them upon reactivation).
From here: http://downloads.subratam.org/ResetTeaTimer.bat
Alternative link: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/lonny/ResetTeaTimer.bat

Right click and Save Link As
Save it as resetteatimer.bat
Save it to your Desktop

1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
5) Restart your computer.

Double click on resetteatimer.bat and wait for it to finish

Since it will not be needed again, delete ResetTeaTimer.bat after you run it.
When we are COMPLETELY finished with ALL your fixes, you can turn TeaTimer back on again via SpyBot's tools resident page.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Then click Finish.
    • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
    • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
    • On the Scanner tab:
      • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
      • Then click on the Scan button.
      • The next screen will ask you to select the drives to scan. Leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
      • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
      • :
      • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
      • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
      • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
      • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
      • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. :(see Note below)
      • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

      • Please include a fresh HijackThis log as well.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

You can leave PC-Cillin running, but please disable Defender:   Done

TeaTimer:  I thought I had it running but cannot find it under programs or search.

Note:  going to Advanced Spybot S&D and unchecking resident teatimer, I got a whole slew of popups saying that user had declined to allow the change.   I tried it again and this time it allowed me to accept the change.

Downloaded the ResetTeaTimer.bat and rebooted, but it said "unsupported version" and closed.

I did not continue with the list until I let you know I could not run that batch file.
(I am running Vista Home Premium, if that is an issue.   Maybe it has more to do with me not finding TeaTimer, but I'm not going to guess.)

According to your log, you are running TeaTimer:
      C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy\TeaTimer.exe

If the .bat does not work, please uninstall Spybot. You can reinstall it when we are finished.
To uninstall, go into Spybot > Immunize
      UNdo all protection..
      Following that,:
      Click Mode -> Advanced Mode
      Click Yes
Click Tools (located in the bottom left corner) -> Resident
      Uncheck both boxes.
      Then close Spybot.

Go to Start > All Programs >Spybot >Uninstall Spybot
      Reboot.

After that, please continue with the rest of the instructions.

      Good job! :)

Please launch HijackThis and place a checkmark next to the following:
      O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
Close all windows except HijackThis and click "Fix Checked".

Run DiskCleanup in each user profile.

      1. Open Disk Cleanup by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking All Programs, clicking Accessories, clicking System Tools, and then clicking Disk Cleanup.
      2. In the Disk Cleanup Options dialog box, choose whether you want to clean up your own files only or all of the files on the computer. Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
      3. If the Disk Cleanup: Drive Selection dialog box appears, select the hard disk drive that you want to clean up, and then click OK.
      4. Click the Disk Cleanup tab.
      * Please make sure only the following are checked:
      -- Downloaded Program Files
      -- Temporary Internet Files
      -- Recycle Bin
      -- Temporary Files
      5. When you finish selecting the files you want to delete, click OK, and then click Delete files to confirm the operation. Disk Cleanup proceeds to remove all unnecessary files from your computer.

      Reboot.

Let me know how things are running after all that. If all is well, we'll flush your System Restore.

Hopefully we are in the homestretch!

After using DiskCleanup and rebooting, I got this error message:

      Error loading C:\Users\Laura\AppData\Local\Temp\mIJCUMDw.dll
The specified module could not be found.

The name of the dll has changed but is similar to what has happened each time I've rebooted during this process.  Another dll that has shown up is wvUnoLFY.dll or mUCUMDw.dll

Let's run MBAM again. This time rather than a Quick Scan, please do a Complete Scan. Please post the log along with a Hijackthis log. Let me know if you continue to get that error on reboot.

Okay, about to run MBAM again this time a complete scan and HiJackThis. But I have to tell you that before I got your message, thinking we were done, I did download SpyBot again and run it.   It found 46 incidents of Smitfraud C.   I did not let it delete anything and have again taken it down, removed Teatimer etc.   I hope I haven't caused a problem.

Please leave Spybot off of there for now. It is probably finding what is in the quarantine of MBAM.

Please disable Spyware Doctor and Windows Defender again. We are not finished.

Please launch HijackThis and place a checkmark next to the following:
      O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

Close all windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked". Close HijackThis.
      Reboot.

Let me know how things are running after that. Thanks.
