Problem after removing threat file

Question

Hello,   Hope I'm posting in the right spot, if not pleast tell me which board to post on.  Was getting alot of popups on one of our computers.  After running Norton AV 2005, 2 files were shown as Adware.Latent of which Norton could not fix or delete.  Files were shown in System32 as 0o8w0lk0.dll and 0o8w6vci.dll.  Since the files could not be removed in regular mode, went into safe mode and deleted them.  Ran Norton again in normal mode and the files no longer show up as a threat, but now when the computer boots up it is showing the text box that a file is missing, that being 0o8w0lk0.dll and the computer is running slow.  Did I screw something up?  Can anyone help? Thank you.

Download the latest version of HJT(hijackthis) (version 1.99.1) from

http://majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

you must create a separate folder and place it there.... people commonly use C:\HJT. Note: Please do *NOT* use a TEMP (temporary) folder, *NOR* your DESKTOP, as HJT will be generating log files and backup files in the folder from which it is run... you risk accidentally losing these if you use a TEMP folder, and you will generate extreme clutter if you use your DESKTOP.

The file above comes as a compressed .ZIP file... you have to UNzip it (hopefully, you have an UNzip utility built into your Windows Explorer. If for any reason, you're unable to UNzip it, you can download the already-unzipped .EXE file from http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/HijackThis.exe )

After Unzipping, double click on HiJackThis.EXE

Click on Do a System Scan and Save a LogFile

This will automatically open NotePad

Copy the entire file from NotePad: EDIT/SelectAll, EDIT/Copy

Then go to the new forum dedicated for HiJack This logs (**NOT** back here), and PASTE the results there:

Some experts may insist you move HJT before they'll begin working with you. Others will start the repair process, advising you to move HJT as one of the very first steps. Failure to do so can result in losing potentially critical information. So please, just use the suggested C:\HJT directory, rather than try to be creative.

c) BAD: posting your log in the wrong forum...

if you post your log back here, in the Virus/SpyWare forum, it will "sit idly", either until the forum moderator gets around to move it for you... or until you decide to repost your log... in the HiJackThis forum.

POST SCRIPT: It has come to my attention that many people are unfamiliar with how to create the recommended sub-directory/folder C:\HJT ;

while others are able to create this directory, but are unsure how to move HJT into it (from wherever it happened to get downloaded into, "by default")...

If you have either of these "problems", then you should d ownload a self-extracting copy of HijackThis from

Save it to your Desktop.

Double-click on the file hijackthis_sfx.exe file, and it will self-extract into its own folder,

Run HJT.  click on DO A SYSTEM SCAN ONLY. Hello,  Did as you suggested and am no longer getting the missing module box when booting up. The 3 items you had me check are gone and I did not have to go into safe mode to get rid of them. sorry for the delayed response, but i've been out sick.... still sick at the moment... :-(

here's what happened.... Norton picked up on an infected file 0o8w0lk0.dll which you successfully managed to delete in safe mode.

but in addition to that file itself, there was also a registry entry... a "calling card" that tried to reference and activate that bad file. so, after you deleted the bad file, windows still tried, based on the "calling card", to look for, and activate the file upon boot-up... which, since it was no longer present, gave you the boot-up error message that this file was not found.

the calling card, in your case, was the o4 line:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [0o8w0lk0.dll] RUNDLL32.EXE 0o8w0lk0.dll,b 15091703

which i had you remove... and after that, you no longer got the boot-up error message.

[the other two lines, each marked (file missing) , were UNrelated to this issue.... i was just doing some minor "clean up" at the same time.

At this point, since 1) i've fixed your "immediate" problem, and 2) i'm still somewhat sick at the moment, I'm gonna try to ask someone else to step-in, to determine additional problems (if any) that you might have. Hi, hope you are feeling better - bad time of year, everyone has something!  Well thanks for the explanation and here's what happened after that UGH - worked fine for a day and then that evening started all over again with other weird stuff popping up and son clicked on something that popped up to supposedly help and it got worse (it's my sons computer - not mine thankfully).  Anyway, bit the bullet and did a new install of everything.  Took us a while of reading install instructions, etc., and a few phone calls to techy friends of my sons, but all went well. Make sure you have System Restore running (toggle it off and On today to get rid of any bad stuff it may have retained)
and then you can just go back to an earlier time if you hit a bad site. Following link explains how:

One way to make an infection more obvious is to check everything in your current HijackThis and Add to Ignore List then set up Hijackthis to run at boot and to show you if it finds anything new.

To avoid going to a bad site you might want to install IE-SpyAd and SpywareBlaster and make the other changes recommended at:.

Always run a firewall. The one in XP SP2 is pretty good tho I think the free one from Zone Alarm is better.

Turn on Autoupdates so you always get the latest patches from Windows.

Never hurts to do one of the free on line scans from Panda or Trend. They take a while but are pretty good.

Java:

Make sure you have removed any older versions of Java or JRE with Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs. Updates do not remove the older versions which have exploitable flaws.

If you are not running the latest version of Adobe you should consider updating. There are reports of a loophole for hackers in pre 7.03 versions.
As an alternative you can dump adobe completely and use fox-it instead:
