Question's on security updates
Hello everyone Today I went to Windows Update site and saw that I have 4 Important Updates that need to be installed. These 3, KB2936068, KB2922229, and KB890830 were already pre-selected, [ had a check mark in their respective boxes], but KB2929437 did not. It was shown as being a Cumulative Security Update for IE 11. Should I go ahead and install the KB2929437 when I do the other 3, or wait until those are done and than do it? Or should I install it first? It is listed first, if that means anything. Any idea as to why it was not pre-selected like the rest of them were? Thanks LKW198

An excellent question, which I was about to raise here as well... to which we don't yet have an answer.
For anyone else following this:
Update KB 2929437 is showing up under Windows Update as a Cumulative Security Update for IE 11 (in my case, on a Win7 system)... but as LKW noted, it is NOT pre-checked for installation.
But I was automatically offered (i.e., pre-checked) KB 2936068 --- which is the update corresponding to MS14-018 --- Security Update for IE.
Looking at the documentation for KB 2929437 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2929437 , it is described as incorporating the cumulative fixes of MS14-018, and additionally, offering "new enhancements" related to "F12 developer tools, IE11's WebGL renderer, Enterprise Mode for IE, JavaScript typed array enhancements" as well as a few other items. Do we need all of these? I myself have no idea. I will try to check things out later... and if someone else gets a definitive answer first, feel free to post here (ideally, with incontrovertible documentation).

I've found one official explanation from Dustin C. Childs (Group Manager, Response Communications, Microsoft Trustworthy Computing) here http://blogs.technet.com/b/msrc/archive/2014/04/08/the-april-2014-security-updates.aspx
which says:
"Customers running Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 also can choose a cumulative update: KB2929437. In addition to previous [MS14-018] updates for Internet Explorer 11 on these operating systems, it includes enhancements such as improved Internet Explorer 11 compatibility for enterprise applications. If you install this cumulative update, you will not need to install the KB2936068 update offered through MS14-018".

Looks like the "optional" KB2929437 installs an "enhanced" version of IE11 as described here: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ie/archive/2014/04/02/announcing-an-updated-version-of-internet-explorer-11-available-on-windows-8-1-windows-7-and-windows-phone-8-1.aspx

Lots of new features (Developer tools, Enterprise Mode) that I have to wonder if any of us, as individuals, will ever use???

I honestly don't know the answer to that. I have installed the optional/enhanced version on machines at work, but not on my home system [at least not yet... I figure I can always install it at a later time, if I find its features necessary].
If I learn/hear anything more, I'll be sure to let you know.
