Redirect issue
I had a malicious virus that wouldn't allow me to go to any website, now it just redirects when I click on some links and at other random times.
I would really appreciate your help, here is my hijackthis log:

Welcome. Thank you for using Dell Community Forums.
It appears that you may still be infected. What software diagnosed it to begin with?
I am reviewing your log. In the meantime, you can help me by addressing the following:
* Have you posted this issue on another forum? If so, please provide a link to the topic.
* If you have disabled System Restore in an attempt to begin cleaning malware, please enable it now. We will flush System Restore when we are finished cleaning and we are sure that everything is running smoothly.
* If you are using any cracked software, please remove it. In addition to being illegal, when you install cracked software, you are running executable files from dubious, unknown sources. You are giving these sources access to information on your hard disk, and potential control over operation of your computer. Definition of cracked software HERE.
* If you are using any P2P (file sharing) programs, please remove them before we clean your computer. The nature of such software and the high incidence of malware in files downloaded with them is counter productive to restoring your PC to a healthy state. That includes BitTorrent and similar programs. There is a partial list HERE.
* Have you at any time used Dell's Screen Share program to browse the Dell site?
* If this computer belongs to someone else, do you have authority to apply the fixes we will use?
* After we begin working, please print or copy all instructions to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out procedures. Please follow all instructions in sequence. Do not, on your own, install/re-install any programs or run any fixes or scanners that you have not been instructed to use because this may cause conflicts with the tools that I am using. Please note that these fixes are not instantaneous. Most infections require more than one round to properly eradicate. It is understood by the trained analysts that once a helper replies to a log, he continues working with you until the issue is resolved.
* During the course of our cleanup please do not do any additional online work or surfing until we have verified that your system is clean.
* We may be using some specialized tools during our fix. Certain embedded files that are part of legitimate programs or specialized fix tools such as process.exe, restart.exe, SmiUpdate.exe, reboot.exe, ws2fix.exe, prcviewer.exe and nircmd.exe may at times be detected by some anti-virus/anti-malware scanners as a "RiskTool", "Hacking tool", "Potentially unwanted tool", or even "malware (virus/trojan)" when that is not the case. Such programs have legitimate uses in contexts where an authorized user or administrator has knowingly installed it. These detections do not necessarily mean the file is malware or a bad program. It means it has the potential for being misused by others. Anti-virus scanners cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert you or even automatically remove them. *Please note also that not all of our tools work on 64-bit systems, so we may be limited in our procedures.
* The presence of windows error codes may indicate hardware problems and could limit the success of infection removal.
- Download ERUNT
(ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.)- Install ERUNT by following the prompts
(use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the start-up folder, if you like you can enable this option later)- Start ERUNT
(either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup)- Choose a location for the backup
(the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable). If there is a problem after making changes to the system, to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERUNT.exe
Let me know after you have installed ERUNT.
No Reply within 3 days will result in this topic being closed, and I will remove it from my subscriptions. If you require more time, please let me know.
Instructions posted for this user are customized for this user only. The tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections. If you think you have similar problems, please post a log at the top of this board to start a new forum topic.

Sorry, to clarify, I have never used screen share to browse Dell's site. I may have shared my screen once or twice for technical support from Dell remotely.

Thanks for your quick response!
I originally used Norton 360 and ran the scan numerous times in safe mode until it would allow me to open IE.
I have not posted this issue to another forum (although I did post it here about 4 months ago, started a new job and then never got back to it). I have not changed or turned off my system restore settings. I don't have any cracked software or us any P2P programs. I don't believe I have ever shared my screen through Dell or otherwise and the computer is my personal laptop.
I installed ERUNT and backedup my registry.

Thank you for the information.
We need to see some additional information about what is happening in your machine.
Please download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
-----------------------------------------------------
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. Information on A/V control HERE.

Reboot into Safemode:
Turn on the computer. Immediately begin tapping the F8 key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the Enter key.
Configure to show all files/folders:
Go to Start>Search and at the top select Tools>Folder Options
Select the View tab Display the contents of system folders
Show hidden files and folders
Uncheck: Hide protected operating system files Click on Apply. Next go to the side of the Search box and select All files and folders. Go down to More advanced options.
Be sure the first three boxes are selected:
Search System folders
Search Hidden Files and folders
Search SubFolders
Please go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall Fast Browser Search (My Tattoons).
Launch Hijackthis and place a check mark next to the following if they still exist:
O2 - BHO: XBTBPos00 - {FCBCCB87-9224-4B8D-B117-F56D924BEB18} - C:\Program Files\Fast Browser Search\IE\FBStoolbar.dll
O3 - Toolbar: Fast Browser Search Toolbar - {1BB22D38-A411-4B13-A746-C2A4F4EC7344} - C:\Program Files\Fast Browser Search\IE\FBStoolbar.dll
There are two of these:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [kjcwxmpl] C:\Documents and Settings\David Danvers\Local Settings\Application Data\biefqvppc\ycrxpxltssd.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [kjcwxmpl] C:\Documents and Settings\David Danvers\Local Settings\Application Data\biefqvppc\ycrxpxltssd.exe
Close all other windows and click "Fix Checked". Close Hijackthis.
Delete these folders if they still exist:
c:\program files\fast browser search
C:\Documents and Settings\David Danvers\Local Settings\Application Data\biefqvppc
Reboot Normally.
Go back to rehide files. Start>Search and at the top select Tools>Folder Options
Select the View tab Display the contents of system folders

In going through your latest procedures, I had one question and one issue:
I would like to confirm that I configured the search but never searched for anything, correct?
And Add/Remove wouldn't respond/remove the Fast Browser program, but I was able to delect the program file\fast browser.
Here are the results of the TDSSKiller run:

Good job. Is Fast Browser still listed in your Add/Remove Programs?
Now let's run MBAM.
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
- If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
- Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
- If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates,
manually download them from hereand just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
Alternatively, you can update through MBAM's interface from a clean computer,
copy the definitions (rules.ref) located in
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes'
Anti-Malware from that system to a usb stick or CD and then copy it to the infected machine.
On the Scanner tab:
- Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
- Then click on the Scan button.
- If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
- The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top.
It may take some time to complete so please be patient.- When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully.
Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".Back at the main Scanner screen:
Note:-- If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,
you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process.
Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately.
Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
-- MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine.
If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes (like Spybot's Teatimer),
they may interfere with the fix or alert you after scanning with MBAM.
Please disable such programs until disinfection is complete or permit them to allow the changes.
**If you need to re-install MBAM but encounter issue in re-installing, try using the MBAM Cleanup Utility by downloading it from HERE
Let me know how things are running at this point.

Hello,
So far so good. Indeed the Fast Browser is still in my add/remove and doesn't respond to clicking "change/remove". It shows a website for support (uninstall) but it just directs you to use add/remove.
On another note: I noticed the scan took a while to search through all of my temporary internet files, should I just delete all these periodically?
Thanks for your help!
Here are the results of MBAM:

Forgot to answer the performance question. I did a few searches and followed links...with no redirects! A very good sign. And it seems to navigate to the pages much more quickly than before. I stayed on a few pages for a while and it didn't launch the Walmart gift card winner page again. Both are big improvements.

We still have some things to clean up.
We can continue if you will remove Bearshare which is a P2P file sharing program. If you have any other P2P sharing programs please remove them as well.Following that, please launch HijackThis once more. At the Main window select "Open the misc tool section"
Click on the Config button.
Click the Misc. Tools button and select "Open uninstall manager". It will show you a list of your installed programs.
Click "Save list" and save it to your desktop. Copy and paste that list as a reply to this thread. Thanks.
Thanks.

You have Viewpoint installed. Viewpoint developed a behavioral targeting product in 2006. Viewpoint is associated with a program called viewmgr.exe and the ViewPoint Media Player.
Viewpoint is bundled with AOL, AOL Instant Messenger, Adobe Atmosphere, Netscape 7, etc and sometimes not mentioned in the license agreement. Hardware manufacturers pre-install some of these applications.
ViewPoint Toolbar will redirect your search queries and also transmits non personally identifiable information back to their servers. The Viewpoint Toolbar is listed is also classified as a threat in the CounterSpy Threat Library because it hijacks your search queries and also transmits non personally identifiable information back to their servers.
Viewpoint Manager is a media player often bundled with AIM software. Viewpoint Manager is a useless add on.
Because Viewpoint's software will track your web surfing and tailor advertisements based on the web pages you are visiting, I suggest you remove the program.
** Note: Removing Viewpoint Media Player may cause the program that bundled it to not function as intended. For AOL and AIM it is needed to use their 3D icons known as Super Buddies and for customized themes, etc.
If you wish to remove Viewpoint, end process on ViewManager in Task Manager.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
Following that, remove the Viewpoint folder in your Program Files.
Download and scan each user profile with CCleaner (a good utility to keep and use regularly.):
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds
** Select to download the SLIM version.
** Because CCleaner removes everything in temp folders, if you have anything saved in a temp folder, back it up or move it to a permanent folder prior to running CCleaner.
** We will be cleaning cookies as well. Make a note of any passwords, etc. that you want to save. If you do not want to delete cookies, simply uncheck that option.
1. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"
2. Then select the items you wish to clean up. In the Windows Tab:
3. Click the "Analyze" button. When the list of files comes up, click the "Run Cleaner" button.
4. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
5. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
6. Now use CCleaner's Clean up Add/Remove feature to remove Fast Browser - first try the Run Installer button. If that doesn't work use Delete Entry.
Click "exit" when done. REBOOT.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
Delete the downloaded installation file after completing the above procedure and reboot if not prompted to do so.
Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications.
To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:
* Go to Start-->Control Panel-->Java-->Advanced-->Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter.
* Click Ok and reboot your computer.
Let me know how things are running at that point. If everything is running smoothly, we'll reset System Restore and you'll be good to go.

Ok, I downloaded and ran the ccleaner, indeed it finally removed Fast Browser using Delete Entry. I did cancel it before it finished the 2+ hour "sweep of c: drive", but all the other procedures were done. Also downloaded and followed your directions on the Java update and rebooted. My son used the computer for several hours today (before these routines) and said he had no redirects and much improved speed! thanks very much.

That's good news. If you have not done so already, please delete DDS and its logs as well as TSDDKiller and its log.
After something like this it is a good idea to purge the Restore Points and start fresh.
If everything is running well....
To flush the XP System Restore Points:
(Using XP, you must be logged in as Administrator to do this.)
Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.
When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.
Check the box labeled Turn Off System Restore.
Reboot. Go back in and turn System Restore ON. A new Restore Point will be created.
Here is my standard list of simple steps that you can take to reduce the chance of infection in the future.
If you have used Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware as part of your cleaning procedures, keep it updated and use it to scan every so often for malware, or upgrade to the paid version for realtime scanning and auto updating.
The following suggestions are general prevention and are not customized for your computer. You may have already taken some of these steps, and depending on your current security, you may not need to implement all of these:
1. Visit Microsoft Update: Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system, Office, and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS from Microsoft Update at update.microsoft.com. More info HERE.
2. Please use a firewall and realtime anti-virus. Keep the anti-virus software and firewall software up to date.. Run a complete system scan with your anti-virus at least once a week...preferably in Safe mode.
If your anti-virus program is a paid/licensed version that is about to expire, you can consider removing it and using a free one such as:
Microsoft Security Essentials
AntiVir Personal Edition Classic
Avast! Home Edition
If you prefer not to use the Windows Firewall, there are several of the freeware Firewalls available on the public domain.
Please see this list for anti-virus, firewalls, and other FREE SECURITY SOFTWARE.
3. Using an alternate browser can reduce your chance of certain infections installing themselves. You might consider installing Mozilla / Firefox.
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/
4. Do not use file sharing. Even the safest P2P file sharing programs that do not contain bundled spyware, still expose you to risks because of the very nature of the P2P file sharing process. By default, most P2P file sharing programs are configured to automatically launch at startup. They are also configured to allow other P2P users on the same network open access to a shared directory on your computer. The reason for this is simple. File sharing relies on its members giving and gaining unfettered access to computers across the P2P network. However, this practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft. Even if you change those risky default settings to a safer configuration, the act of downloading files from an anonymous source greatly increases your exposure to infection. That is because the files you are downloading may actually contain a disguised threat. Many very malicious worms and trojans, such as the Storm Worm, target and spread across P2P files sharing networks because of their known vulnerabilities.
5. Keep your software updated...make it easier on yourself and install the free security tool Secunia PSI .
6.
