Search Redirect Problem

Hi:

I'm having a problem with search results redirecting my browser (plus I'm getting extra windows and pop up type ads).  I'm using IE8, XP, Yahoo browser, McAfee Total Protection.  I've run MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpyware to clean up some but subsequently  have uninstalled them.   Please see my HijackThis log below. It looks like there's some additional junk there which may or may not be affecting my ability to get Windows Updates right now.  I'd like to get rid of that too but FIRST the virus, malware, trojan, whatever it is (I have no idea what its name).  Your help is greatly appreciated!!!

Hi chkn,

I'm kevinf80 and I will be helping with any issues you may have. Please be aware that some of the logs I may ask for can be very complex and can take a long time to decipher. I am a volunteer here with a job and family so I ask that you be patient when waiting for replies.
Please DO NOT run any scans/tools/fixes on your own as this will conflict with the tools we are going to use.
Please Print or Save to Notepad all instructions and please follow them carefully and if there's something you don't understand or that will not work please let me know and we will go through it together.
Malware is often buggy and can be very unstable, with that in mind it is advisable to backup any important data before we begin.

Please proceed as follows :-

Step 1

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
Alernative D/L mirror
Alternative D/L mirror

MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to ALLOW the changes. Instructions available HERE
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
  • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Then click Finish.

MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from HERE and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.

On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.

Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Step 2

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool: Combofix

Don`t forget Combofix must be saved to your desktop. <---- Very important

Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

Note: Do not click combofix's window with your mouse while it's running. That action may cause it to stall.

Examples of how to disable realtime protection available at the following link :-

Disable realtime protection

What i`d like to see in your reply :-

  • Log from Malwarebytes
  • Log from Combofix
  • Fresh HJT log

Oh yeah...it's  worth noting that I'm not getting the redirect now (at least for the time being) and it looks like Microsoft would able to update me (although I'm leaving everything alone for now).

BTW, I have the HijackThis Fix Checked list ready if you want me to do anything there.

Thanks for getting back to me so soon Kevin, you are a doll!

MBAM's quick scan found nothing.  When I went to run ComboFix, it let me know that the real time component of the McAfee viruscan was still running (I guess it wasn't enough to turn off viruscan spyware protection).  Since MBAM found nothing, I complied with ComboFix and continued...  (BTW, I didn't read the instructions for running ComboFix, I just went with what you said).

This is more or less how it went:  ComboFix said it couldn't find a file and it wanted to create a new restore point.  After that it said I didn't have a restore console installed so it asked if it could go ahead and do that (I'm like, you get whatever you think I need ComboFix!).  It completed that successfully and I got an IE error and should I send the error to Microsoft...I said no.

ComboFix said it detected rootkit activity and wanted to reboot.  Everything went smoothly.  I did get another little hint icon from McAfee on the system tray after the reboot saying I wasn't protected so I hope it didn't turn the real time scanning back on.  ComboFix didn't complain and finished running.

Let me know if you need me to do anything differently.  I did noticed that the first HijackThis log I  posted had something about Norton or Symantec but that's only because I downloaded their free scan which of course didn't find anything.  It's some kind of ActiveX and is not supposed to have a real time component anyway.

ATENTION ATTENTION: VirusTotal is a free service offered by Hispasec Sistemas. There are no guarantees about the availability and continuity of this service. Although the detection rate afforded by the use of multiple antivirus engines is far superior to that offered by just one product, these results DO NOT guarantee the harmlessness of a file. Currently, there is not any solution that offers a 100% effectiveness rate for detecting viruses and malware.

Hi chkn,

No you got it right, that feedback was normal. I thought the entry was ok, just needed confirmation

Please proceed as follows :-

Step 1

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan only.  Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {4ED9DDF0-7479-4BBE-9335-5A1EDB1D8A21} -
O16 - DPF: {640B39C1-D713-464F-92C3-75BD972B95EE} - http://www.sidestep.com/get/k42037/sb028.cab
O24 - Desktop Component 0: Desktop Uninstall - C:\WINDOWS\warnhp.html

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.  Close HiJackThis.  Reboot your PC

Step 2

Please download OTM by OldTimer. Save it to your desktop.

Double click OTM.exe to start the tool.
  • Copy the text between the dotted lines below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
    ------------------------------------------------------------------

    :Processes
    explorer.exe

    :Files
    C:\WINDOWS\warnhp.html

    :Commands
    [EmptyFlash]
    [EmptyTemp]
    [Purity]
    [Start Explorer]
    [ResetHosts]
    [Reboot]

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTM

Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

If the machine reboots, the Results log can be found here:

c:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log

Where mmddyyyy_hhmmss is the date of the tool run.

Let me see OTM log and fresh HJT log in reply, also how is system; any specific issues

Kev... very tired zzzzzzzzzz...

Actually, I think something's wrong here (Jotti).  Here's what I get....

Jotti says the scan on 876CA.sys has been done before (and then it comes up with filename 2b3322.sys in the results).  I did submit 876CA.sys (several times).  Here are the results anyway (dates are off so I think something's up):

I think you should go home we can finish this later unless you see something urgent.  I wouldn't mind doing some optimizations, like do you think we need all these:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=5489

and speeding up my browser (but I'd better get my act together first).  I'll check for windows updates later and watch the stability.

Man, I feel like I owe you one of my blackberry pies I'm baking for everything that you've done.  Thank you so much!!!

No complaints so far except that everything's slow when you're in a hurry!!!

Hi chkn,

I`m already home lol, so just had to crawl into bed. Regarding the R1 entries, those are basically the search functions of Internet Explore, all of yours are OK just leave them intact. I need to run two more scans to ensure we got everything sorted.
The first is very thorough and may take several hours, it is essential that you let it run to completion. The second one is quite quick and will let us know of any vulnerabilities in your system.

Please proceed as follows :-

Step 1

Run an online virus scan with Kaspersky from HERE.

1. At the main page. Press on " Accept". After reading the contents.
2. At the next window Select  Update. Allow the Database to update.
Note: If prompted to run or update your Java, then follow the prompts to do so. Kaspersky requires Java to run.
3. Once the Database has finished, under the Scan icon Select My Computer to start the scan. The scan may take a few minutes to complete.
4. Select Scan Report.
5. If any threats were found they will appear in the report
6. Select "Save error report as"
Then in the file name just type in kaspersky
Under "save as type" select text .txt
Save it to your Desktop.
Copy and post the results of the Kaspersky Online scan. If no threats were found then report that as well.

The following animation may help.

Kaspersky Gif

Step 2

Download Security Check by screen317 from HERE or HERE.
Save it to your Desktop.
Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box. Press any key when asked.
A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Let me see those two logs in next reply please, if those are good we can clean up and set you free....

Hi Kevin:

Late night here too.  :emotion-1:  I will try and at least get the first scan going here overnight and come back to you with the rest in the morning.  Thank you so much!  BTW, I went ahead and got caught up on Microsoft Update(s).
