Studio 1747 Antivirus/Antispy-ware Software

Hello --- I have a brand new Studio 1747 laptop that I just received in the mail a week ago.  It has Windows 7 Home Premium run with the core i7 processor upgrade, 4GB RAM, 7200 rpm 500G hard drive, etc.

My question is involving Anti-virus Software.  What do people recommend as a stable, effective anti-virus program to use on a Studio 1747 running 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium edition?  I ask this because I use AVG Free on my other recent computers (64-bit quad core HP desktop running Vista 64), Core 2 Duo HP Laptop running 32-bit Vista.  I tried installing and using AVG Free on my new Studio 1747 and it completely whacked out my entire system.  After installing it, the computer starting locking/freezing up almost every single time I'd boot it up.  Sometimes it would even lockup during bootup.  It probably froze 15 times in one day.  I almost sent the laptop back because I thought something was drastically wrong with it.  But after running diagnostics and realizing I did not have a hardware issue, I did a factory restore and removed everything.  Ever since then, the laptop is running like a charm.

So I ask, if AVG Free eats this thing's lunch, is there another Anti-virus program out there that works with 64-bit Win 7 that people have had success running without crashes and lockups?

Thanks,

Josh

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate and use AVG at the moment for my anti-virus, so it is probably not a compatability issue. I suggest reinstalling AVG, or finding another anti-virus program to run, such as Adaware(Freeware) or McAfee(Subscription Based).

I would recommend either Microsoft Security Essentials or Avast 5. Both are top-notch.

I would agree with Red Dawn.

Question for RD and/or Joe:

Recently, "our" recommendations for Free A/V's have included three names, the two you've just cited, the third being avira antivir.   Is there a reason why each of you is now limiting your suggestions to just the two?

This post is not meant to challange your decision, rather, just asking for a clarification for the benefit of forum users... myself included.

Hello rollsboy,

I had recommended Microsoft Security Essentials to my friends.  Right now I am using KIS 2010 for Antivirus. For an On Demand scanner Malwarebytes (MBAM) and SuperAntiSpyware are recommended.  Ad-Aware is not recommended as much.  I would pay for KIS 2010 instead of McAfee.

You can also read the AV-Comparatives website for more comparison/information:

I have used previously or am using now; MSE, Avast 5, or AntiVir. I have not had any problems with any of them and you can't beat FREE for price. :emotion-5:

I'd go with MSE as well. I figure that if Microsoft writes the operating system, their anti-virus is going to be the most compatible with it. I've been using MSE for a few months after removing Avast, and I really like it.

I still recommend Avira's AntiVir Personal (free), but considering the OP is a first-time poster, I wasn't sure of his level of expertise with handling FPs. Avira had ~ 4x the number of FPs in the latest av-comparatives testing (Nov/09) than did avast or MSE. Hence my recommendations.

And for simplicity, guaranteed compatability, and the large database MS has to draw on, I think MSE has the edge on the free competition, particularly for  first-time users (also no need for a separate real-time anti-malware).

In dynamic testing (Dec/09) avast, AntiVir, and MSE all ranked equally (Advanced) at blocking threats. No other free AV ranked higher.

When I get my next PC, which will not be for business use, I intend to start with MSE. (I'll keep NOD32  for my current system, as I'm comfortable with it, and because of its proven track record both in my experience and in testing).

All,

Thanks a lot for all of the great recommendations.  I'm not sure how or why I hadn't ever heard of MSE before this, but I hadn't.  Thanks for that recommendation though.  I downloaded and installed MSE for 64bit Win 7 and already ran a scan.  So far so good...things seem to be fine.  I am happy now, thanks everyone!

Glad to hear that MSE is doing well on your system. You probably had not heard of it because it is fairly new.

Thanks for the feedback. :emotion-15:
