Update problems with Avast Home Edition

I've been using Avast Home Edition for over three years now, and it has been one of the most trouble-free programs I have ever used. I like it so much I have installed it on other computers. However, for the past 10 days or so, I have been getting, on average of once a day, a red pop-up window from Avast saying it cannot update. There was a new engine upgrade released for Avast this morning, and it was successfully downloaded and installed. At that point, the red pop-up window from Avast appeared again. I closed it out, and another window appeared, asking me to restart my computer so the installation could complete. I did so. Anyway, have any other Avast users been having similar troubles recently?

Hi Lawnmowerguy!

Like you I used Avast Free for a long time without a bit of trouble but about two weeks ago approximately, it started to have trouble updating...acted like the program could not connect with the server or stay connected. If I remember correctly, there was small amount of database update, but the bulk of it was a fairly large program update...think it was somewhere around 4+ megabytes. I tried about 4 days in a row to have this update download with no success, and I don't think any kind of error window came up, just a line in update saying it was trying again. My final solution was to go to AVG...which seems to be a bit easier to use and appears to do a good job and seems to have some kind of update about every day.

Hi Lawnmowerguy
I have Avast on 3 computers and 2 of these have 2 versions of Vista on them,
and do not have any problems at all.
Make sure your PC is seeing the internet, if my wireless is turned off
it will come up with the red flag.
It is possible it was a bad update.

I have uninstalled Avast Home Edition and installed AVG 7.5, free edition. I haven't used AVG in about 4 years. The one thing I didn't like about AVG at the time was that it would not automatically install updated definitions. Instead, it would prompt me to do this via a pop-up window. Does the latest version of AVG (free) automatically install new definitions without bothering the user? Also, how often does AVG release new definitions? Avast did this every 2-3 days.

AVG generally gets at least one update per day (sometimes even more) on weekdays, but not generally on weekends.

the free program, in basic mode, can be set to update automatically once daily.
