Updates 10/18/14 - Sumatra PDF

Sumatra PDF 3.0 (2014-10-18) is an alternative to Adobe Reader, to read .pdf files.

Changes in this release:

•Tabs! Enabled by default. Use Settings/Options... menu to go back to the old UI
•support table of contents and links in ebook UI
•add support for PalmDoc ebooks
•add support for displaying CB7 and CBT comic books (in addition to CBZ and CBR)
•add support for LZMA and PPMd compression in CBZ comic books
•allow saving Comic Book files as PDF
•swapped keybindings:
              ◦F11 : Fullscreen mode (still also Ctrl+Shift+L)
              ◦F5 : Presentation mode (also Shift+F11, still also Ctrl+L)
•added a document measurement UI. Press 'm' to start. Keep pressing 'm' to change measurement units
•new advanced settings: FullPathInTitle, UseSysColors (no longer exposed through the Options dialog), UseTabs
•replaced non-free UnRAR with a free RAR extraction library. If some CBR files fail to open for you, download unrar.dll from http://www.rarlab.com/rar_add.htm and place it alongside SumatraPDF.exe
•deprecated browser plugin. We keep it if was installed in earlier version

============================

Remark:   I personally have no issues with Adobe Reader, and continue to use if to access .pdf files.   But since I know of people who advocate this alternative, I am posting the information here so that they can take advantage of the update.   I have not tested anything... nor do I intend to.

I replaced Adobe Reader with Sumatra PDF a few years back, and have never regretted it.

Brief Review of Sumatra PDF 3.0:

Sumatra is simple, lightweight, and fast. It offers a smaller target to hackers, and might be more secure. The best summary of it comes from Corrine's Security Garden: http://securitygarden.blogspot.ca/2013/02/replacing-adobe-reader-with-sumatra-pdf.html

That said, Adobe Reader does have some bells and whistles that Sumatra lacks, which some might need or find useful. I didn't, and considered them as bloat.

Sumatra Pdf  3.0 is a 4.3 MB download for the installer, which current users can download internally from the Help menu (there is no auto-update for Sumatra, a feature I like in a non-security program). By comparison, the latest Adobe Reader is a 73.4 MB download.

Installation took less than one minute. No re-start needed. There is no bundled software, unlike Adobe which offers a pre-checked option to install McAfee Security Scan Plus.

That's the good news. That not-so-good news is that all the changes I see in 3.0 are cosmetic. A new GUI just for the sake of change, with no security implications. I think most current users can bypass this update.
