Warning! Potential Spyware Operation! Help!

Sorry for posting this in the wrong area originally - I'm a newbie and I kept getting redirected and thought I ended up in the correct area.  Anyway...

I have almost no options available to me even though I am the system administrator.  Cannot regedit, no control panel, cannot change security settings, etc.  Same old story I have been reading in various articles.  I apologize, but I'm not very savvy in this type of thing, so I really need your help.  I have tried numerous antispyware programs that come up with issues, but this particular one is never resolved.

Here is the hijackthis log file:

That's good news! :)
Yes, you can enable AVG and Spyware Doctor again.
As far as your security, as long as it is working for you keep OneCare for your anti-virus and firewall. My first choice for an on-demand anti-spyware scanner is Super AntiSpyware. As far as AVG and Spyware Doctor, if you have the paid versions, both offer realtime scanning (constantly running while you are online and off), so you may want to keep just one. Running both will slow down your system. It's your choice. I tend to lean a bit more toward keeping AVG AS. Each of the anti-spyware programs finds different things. Am I confusing you?
To summarize,basically, you need:
* one antivirus
* one two-way firewall
* one on-demand anti-spyware scanner
* (optionally depending on your surfing habits) one realtime/monitoring anti-spyware scanner (AVG AS if paid version OR Spyware Doctor).

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Please print the following instructions so you can follow them easily.

Because the tools we used to scan the computer, as well as tools to delete files and folders, are no longer needed, they should be removed, along with the folders created by these tools.

Please download the OTMoveIt by OldTimer
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Run the tool by clicking on the icon.
  • Click the Cleanup button.
  • The tools that we used as well as this one will be removed from your system.

OTMoveIt will not delete HijackThis in case you want to keep HJT so you can post a log in the future if you ever have another problem -- assuming the tool does not have a newer version at that time.

You have quite a few outdated versions of Java on there. Let's remove all of them and get one clean version.

You can go here to download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
Scroll down to where it says " Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2 allows end-users to run Java applications".

Click the link to download the Windows (Offline Installation) package: Save it, do not run it. When the download is complete, close the browser.

Remove all prior versions using Add/Remove Programs.
These are the versions showing in your Add/Remove Programs:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_06
Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

Delete the Java folder in Program Files.

Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u2-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Official JAVA Installation Instructions if needed.
Reboot.

Is everything running smoothly? If so, let's flush System Restore, so you can start fresh.

If everything is running well....
To flush the XP System Restore Points:
(Using XP, you must be logged in as Administrator to do this.)
Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.
When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.
Check the box labeled Turn Off System Restore.

Reboot. Go back in and turn System Restore ON. A new Restore Point will be created.

Here are a few of my standard Prevention Tips:
You may have already taken some of these steps:
1. Visit Windows Update:
Make sure that you have all the Critical Updates recommended for your operating system and IE. The first defense against infection is a properly patched OS.
Windows Update: http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

2. Adjust your security settings for ActiveX:
Go to Internet Options/Security/Internet, press 'default level', then OK.
Now press "Custom Level."
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to 'prompt', and 'Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe" to 'disable'.

3. Please use a firewall and realtime anti-virus. Keep the anti-virus software and firewall software up to date.

4. You might consider installing Mozilla / Firefox.
http://www.mozilla.org/

5. Before using or purchasing any Spyware/Malware protection/removal program, always check the Rogue/Suspect Spyware List.
Here is the link:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

6. If you have not already done so, you might want to install CCleaner and run it in each user's profile: http://www.ccleaner.com/
** UNcheck the option to install the Yahoo toolbar that is checked by default for the Standard version, or download the toolbar-free versions (Slim or Basic) when given the option for those.

7. If you use Adobe Reader it may need to be updated to be sure that you have a more secure version. If you are using a version prior to v. 6.05, you should update to 6.05, preferably version 8.1.0.
It would be best to remove prior versions before updating to a new version.
If you need additional assistance, the Adobe forums are here: http://www.adobe.com/support/forums/main.html

8. Practice Safe Surfing with with TrendProtect by Trendmicro.
TrendProtect is a browser plugin that assigns a safety rating to domains listed in your search engine. TrendProtect also adds a new button to your browser's toolbar area. The icon and color of the button changes to indicate whether the page currently open is safe, unsafe, trusted, or unrated, or whether it contains unwanted content.

The following color codes are used by TrendProtect to indicate the safety of each site.

Red for Warning
Yellow for Use Caution
Green for Safe
Grey for Unknown

by TonyKlein

"I'm not pulling your leg, honest"
by Sandi Hardmeier

10. This is an excellent resource for users of all levels. General computer maintenance as well as internet security is covered.
Rootkits for Dummies
(Paperback)
by Larry Stevenson (Author), Nancy Altholz (Author)

Let us know if we have not resolved your problem. Otherwise, you are good to go.
Happy and Safe Surfing!

Well, I have taken almost all of your suggested steps.  I still haven't removed all of the old restore points yet as I want to be sure...

I already had CCleaner installed and ran the cleanup, but what about the "Issues" section.  Should I allow CCleaner to Fix all issues?  (There are a lot of them).

I am not getting any annoying popups at all, but the system is really quite slow, especially at startup (startup takes forever!).  I assume this is due to the installation of the security programs when all this madness started (OneCare and Spyware Doctor were installed after the problem started in an attempt to "cure" it, so I'm not sure how fast/slow startup would have been if everything was working well with these two programs).  Is this a good assumption?  I don't have a very fast system to start with, so I have become very patient.  I hope to add more memory in the near future.

I will await your reply before taking any more steps (you must be sooooo busy!!!!!).

I thank you inadvance for your reply.

Sorry, one more thing. I already have Forefox that I use for work. Would you suggest that I use this browser all the time instead of IE?

Thanks.

What were you using for anti-virus protection before you installed OneCare?

Yes, I suggest FireFox, but you will need to keep your Internet Explorer for Windows Updates.
I do not recommend using the Issues section. If you want to take a chance, you could set a Restore Point FIRST, so if you notice anything not working after using the Issues section, you would at least have a Restore Point to go back to.

There are some links to good articles on troubleshooting slowness here:

Did you see the last few posts here regarding SAS on Startup?
http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=si_virus&thread.id=63002&page=2
Regarding your slow Startup, you might consider delaying or disabling SAS at Start.

Just an update...

I tried pretty well everything suggested to repair a slow system, and nothing worked at all. It would actually take about 25 minutes to completely start and then still would not connect to the internet or would hang up. Unfortunately, I was back at work this week and unable to try more than one of the steps each evening, thus the delay in responding.

Anyway, last night I turned off Spyware Doctor and when I tried to open OnceCare it encountered a problem and I was instructed to uninstall it, reboot, then reinstall it. When I rebooted, everything fired up immediately (it hasn't been this fast since I purchased my laptop 3 years ago!!). When I went to reinstall OneCare, I went to FAQ and it says NOT to install any other spyware programs with OneCare (which also has this feature) as it will cause performance issues.

So, just thought you might like to know that INSTALLING OTHER ANTI-SPYWARE PROGRAMS WITH ONECARE IS A NO-NO (unless, maybe, you have more memory that I do).

I have just ordered more memory for my Dell, so I doubt I'll have any complaints about performance in the future. All of your tips will help me keep it running much more smoothly.

Once again, I want to thank you very much for resolving all of my computer issues. Keep up the good (and very valuable) work!!

Yes, I know OneCare can be a problem.
That is why I wrote:
"as long as it is working for you keep OneCare" and why I asked what AV you were using prior to OneCare.

You're welcome. I'm glad you were able to resolve your issue. :)
