We need you to download and install an analysis and repair tool called Hijackthis.

Please unzip Hijackthis.zip into a new folder you create in the root level of the C: drive. Name this folder C:\HJT for best and safest results. (don't put in a temp folder, or the desktop, etc...as it needs a safe folder to keep backup logs). Also when people post here and place it on the Desktop the log usually shows their full name since their Windows user profile is commonly named with their full name. We try not to disturb your privacy. *;-)

You have the .master-search version of CWS - unfortunately the CWShredder has not yet been updated to cope with that, but it should help hopefully. For a time the website that was installing it had a uninstaller, but that has been withdrawn, so we are still waiting on our anti-malware experts to solve the issue.

A new version of CWShredder has come out in the last 12 hours. V1.56.3 - if you have an earlier version, please use the update function. If not here is downlaod pages for it,

OK...I've downloaded the CWShredder file, run it and it seems to have removed it...I enclose a new version of the log file for hijackthis.  While it seems to work alright, I am still seeing a reference to what I think was the problem site in the Internet Start Page line below.  Is this something I get rid of by going into the registry keys??  Also, not too sure what you meant by you suggesting running the CWShredder  in safe mode??

When you boot your computer from cold, and press the F8 key while it starts up -(several times) - it should give a menu of how to start windows. The safe mode is provided for trouble shooting, such as this. It is a mode with very little in the way of drivers loaded and importantly much less likely that malware will be running.

Thanks for the info...I've fix those items you suggested while in safe mode and I include the log file from Hijackthis below (this is the log file after I have run HJT after rebooting the machine).  I have tried the web browser several times and it does not seem to be redirecting so hopefully this has fixed this problem.

I would like to ask about what I think may be a related problem with emails that I am getting in my MS Outlook.  I am getting all kinds of emails from people I don't know.  The emails have titles like "Hi", "Your picture", Your document", "Document".  The enclosed message says to "Please have a look at the attached file."  The enclosed file is usually entitled "McAfee_emailscanreport.txt".  I know that there were viruses last year with titles like this but not sur ewhy I am getting these now

I have been getting a lot of these lately and in fact receive four such files this evening.  I am wondering if I am dealing with another virus problem or whether the problem that I have been working on is related??  I have the McAfee firewall turned on but I am starting to think that this product is garbage as it doesn't seem to be stopping a whole lot at the firewall.  Can you provide some feedback as to whether the McAfee firewall is a worthwhile product or if there are other alternatives that would prevent the infections that I have been getting.

Hi sorry I have not responded sooner, but my aunt is very ill in hospital, and I have a need to spend some time with my uncle and her.

Look at the info on my website regarding malware (Link below). Some things you can do to stop getting infected again:-

Spybot s&d, Ad-aware Run weekly - or after a heavy internet session.

Spywareblaster & Spywareguard, first sets kill bits to stop known bad activeX controls installing, second acts like your AV to stop browser hijacks and installing of known badies.

Also ie-spyad (Link on my site), puts 4000 bad sites in your restricted (banned) sites list, to stop you accidentaly getting sent to a bad site, it has optional list of "bad" adult sites to install as well.

All those with links from my site. Do remember just like Anti-Virus they need to be updated regularly, I do mine weekly, Anti-Virus hourly.

With these and a firewall in place I have to try various bad sites when checking peoples hijackthis logs looking to sort bad from good, and I have not yet been infected. Still time for it to happen LOL.

A firewall is not to stop email (with or without viruses) it is to stop direct attacks against your computer from outside.

Social engineering virus messages...they are rampant. Netsky, Bagle, etc... Keep your guard up.

McAfee Firewall should be good...I prefer NIS 2004. Others like Zone Alarm. Having one is a good layer of defense to stop infections and limits the damage if it occurs.

 Don't forget keeping Windows updated. The automatic updates frequently fail so run it manually once a week or when new updates are publicized.

 Practice safe computer habits. Don't click on strange email attachments thinking your AV will defend you. Usually it will. Sometimes it won't when a new virus hits the Net and definitions take hours to create by the AV vendors. There is only one defense that works 100% for the safe protection of your machine's personal data and that is timely and accurate backups of your files. Hard drives die, viruses ruin your files, and other bad things can happen (fire, theft, etc..). Offsite backups are the best.
