What does a "script blocker" do? Do I need it?

In reading about the free version of Avast (which I am wanting to download) I see it does not have "Script Blocking."  What is script blocking? (in easy to understand terms, please...)

What happens if I don't have it. Where is the danger? Will I be ok without it? (I play games, surf the net, do email - I don't do fancy stuff.)

Thanks.

Script blocking is normally a function of your firewall. When you go to certain websites, you should get a warning from Windows Firewall "did you notice the information bar" it means that there is an active script that needs to run before the entire contents of the page can be displayed. This for your protection.

If it's a site you know and trust, then it maybe o.k. to click the bar and see the content. If it's a site you are unsure about, or just find surfing, then I would view the site and leave the active X content (script) blocked.

You will be happier with Avast than Norton's

Here's a link for an additional firewall and it's free

ZoneAlarm

Thanks, bamajim, for your helpful reply.

From reading your reply, I think I would feel more secure with script blocking and a good firewall  - and I don't think avast alone can do it. I am wondering if there is a downloadable script blocker/firewall that I could use with avast without causing a compatibility problem.

Maybe I should look into another AV program that has all that I need but which won't hog resources like Norton. (I have Spy Sweeper so I don't need an antispy program..)

I've heard Zone Alarm mentioned on this forum. Sounds good. But will it work with avast, and does it have script blocking?

Thanks, bamajim,

You've made my day!  Going to use avast and zone alarm and rest secure.

Yes it does, and yes it will work with AVAST very well.

I have Spy Sweeper that I pay for, and a free Lavasoft Adaware - which is not updated.

Will those two plus avast and zone alarm keep me safe?

I just want to second the recommendation of the free Zone Alarm and Avast. Combining them with several free spyware programs (Spybot Search and Destroy, AdAware, Spyware Blaster, and Microsoft Antispyware Beta), and looking for updates every day, is the way to hopefully stay out of trouble.

No combination of AV and Anti-spyware applications will keep you entirely safe, since so many infections these days rely on human behavior and psychology to slip past these defenses. I urge you to read the link bamajim gave you above "How did I get Infected anyways?"  by Tony Klein for more specific examples and advice.
