Where did OneNote come from?

Today I noticed a new icon in my notification tray labelled "OneNote". I have not a clue where this came from, other than it is from Microsoft and is related to  Office 2013. (I have MS Office Home/Student 2010 and updates).  I can only surmise that it came bundled with some "Important update" from MS. More info on this un-invited program is here:
en.wikipedia.org/.../Microsoft_OneNote

It is not listed in my Startup programs in msconfig, yet there it appears in my notification tray every time I reboot. As far as I'm concerned it is foistware. It is not listed in Windows 7 Control Panel>Programs and Features. I removed it via WinPatrol Plus>Active Tasks tab, and it no longer appears. (When I searched it via WinPatrolPlus, 14/15 respondents said they had no clue about this program, and one respondent said they believed it to be "safe but not necessary".

I don't have any reason to think it malicious, but at the same time I have no use for software that insinuates itself uninvited on my computer. Just an FYI.

Joe,

When I installed Microsoft Office 2013, it also installed OneNote

It was installed with my MS Office Home/Student 2010. I never use it, but it is in my notification tray.  I keep it hidden.

It's also listed as a component of Office in my "show all programs" when I open Office.

It is part of Office/Office 365. On my systems, it is listed on the Windows 8.1 Start Screen with all the Office 2013 components. On Windows 7/Office 2010 it is in the Start Menu.Because it is part of the Office Suite, I don't think it can be completely removed by itself, but it can be disabled.

I know a lot of people who love it and can't live without it -- blog writers, students, etc..
There are some tutorials online.

Thanks for the replies, folks.

It just seemed odd that it made its presence known after so many years- no doubt I activated it somehow. Perhaps I'll find a use for it.
