I just checked three Win 7 machines. None of them had any updates due. The optionals are still listed as "Optional".  I'll be interested to read what other members post here.

I just had a small WD definitions update, plus a notice that Internet Explorer 10 was available, which I want to check into before I download and install it.

OK, thanks folks. I guess this MS hiccup was exclusive to my one system. I couldn't find anyone else on a web search reporting this glitch.

None of these Win 7 updates were "new", and I hadn't changed my update settings from previous (Notify only). No new software installed in months, except for IE 10 and Windows important updates. I don't use this PC for testing anything, and do all my web surfing on my XP system.

I ended up (re-) installing all 48, and wasn't that fun?  Secunia PSI now confirms I'm fully patched (just like it did a week ago). My various security scans all remain clean. I have no idea what caused this, but there it is. Most peculiar!

I have Window 7 Home and there are not updates available.  Let us know if you ever figure this out.

I receive Kim Komando's weekend column. On today's version here is what she had to say about Windows Updates...

"Last week I told you to update Windows with the security fixes Microsoft released in its monthly Patch Tuesday. Well, there's actually another update this month.

Earlier this week, Microsoft released Windows 7 service pack 1. This service pack combines all previous Windows 7 updates, as well as some new ones.

Windows 7 users  will need to install this update to receive any future security patches or support from Microsoft. I recommend doing so as soon as possible.

Note that the update can take 30 minutes or more. So be sure to install it when you know you won't urgently need your computer."

I have not received this W7-SP1 update package yet. Perhaps they are doing this in batches in order to not overload the update servers.

Dale,

SP1 for Windows 7 was issued a long time ago. This recent push is to reach the people who did not install it when most of us did. Are you sure you do not already have SP1?  If you don't, you will probably be offered it when you normally get your Windows updates on the second Tuesday of the month.

Well, the update was dated for today. The way she words it seems to imply that this is something new. I do have Service Pack 1 on that other machine. Maybe the servers made a mistake with Joe's system. Another thing to make one go hmmmm.... :emotion-40:

Kim has always made me go hmmmmm :emotion-40:  It's been a while since I followed her program. Does Kim send you that newsletter for free, or does she still charge for it as she charges to become a "member" to post in her forum?

No, it's a free newsletter...don't listen on the radio any more and don't go on any forums. I get it mostly for the tips, tricks, and cool links.

Followup:

I reviewed my "Installed Updates" on this Win 7/SP1 64 bit system, and notice that since my original post on March 20, a lot more than just 48 updates were added:

- 7 Security Updates for .Net Framework 4 Client Profile
- 4 Security Updates for .Net Framework 4  Extended
- 39 updates for MS Office 2010 32 bit Edition
- 1 MS Silverlight Update
- 16 Updates for MS Windows

That makes a total of 67 updates installed since the last Patch Tuesday (March 12).  Since then, as always, I only installed "Important" updates, not "Recommended"or "Optional". (And indeed, I still see 8 optional updates listed).

I also confirmed that I had successfully installed Win 7 Service Pack 1 (KB976932) almost 2 years ago. Furthermore, my "Update Settings" has always checked the option to give me updates to other MS products (such as Office).  So I can't believe this dump of updates represents some sort of "catch-up".

As this PC still works well, I will not be investigating this further. But I can't help thinking that MS pulled a fast one on me.
