Windows 8 & McAfee firewall
I have recently purchased a new Dell laptop with Windows 8. McAfee security was already built in with one month's free trial. That included the firewall. Now the free trial has ended I am being bombarded with pop ups to buy the full suite. Trying to find Windows firewall rather than McAfee, it seems it doesn't exist. Only McAfee. That is turned on, for short periods and then it snoozes and I have to wake it up again, about every 24 hours. This is unacceptable. I do not wish to buy McAfee, my preference, if I have to pay, is for AVG, but the firewall was always included in Windows before. What do you suggest? I am not technical! Nor do I use the PC for anything much other than emails and some shopping.

Once McAfee is removed, the Windows Firewall and Defender should be enabled automatically. If not, let us know. To see if the firewall exists on Win 8/8.1, did you look via the Control Panel> Windows Firewall?
As far as other security, see this discussion: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/virus-spyware/f/3522/t/19541878.aspx
Defender (Microsoft Security Essentials) is already included as part of Windows 8. In your case, that's all I'd use in addition to Malwarebytes. If you do online shopping, you may want to use the paid version because it will alert you to malicious webpages.
If you prefer not to use a free AV, I suggest ESET's NOD32.
If you are interested in free security software, there is a detailed list here: http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachinesforum/index.php/board,108.0.html
and a general list here: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/virus-spyware/w/spyware_virus/42.free-security-software.aspx
Let us know if you have additional questions.

That was easy! Thank you very much. I was just a bit scared of removing McAfee and unable to have any replacement. Windows Firewall is now activated and I'm happy. Thank you for your further links and suggestions.
