free spyware programs

Hi to my forum colleagues and friends.  My question concerns finding good spyware programs that are also free of charge to download and use.  In the past I have gone to search engines and typed "free anti-spy programs" in the box but they are still very hard to find.  I know about lavasoft and spybot and one other called super spy or something like that.  A number of times the so called free programs that come up in search are free for a month or so.  What I am talking about are totally free programs that do a good job and are easy to use.  I have the highly touted windows defender on my machine but haven't caught a thing with it.  A response from someone would be welcome.

FWIW, I think Window's Defender is a good antispyware program, and it is the only one I keep resident (running in real-time).

There are a couple of other totally free on-demand scanners I also use and can recommend:
- a-squared Free 2.0 (on-demand  anti-spyware/anti-trojan scanner)
- AVG/ewido anti-spyware v.7.5  You can get a full 30 day trial, but when this elapses you still get to keep the basic on-demand scanner. You will have to keep it updated manually.

Here is the list of all legit spyware removers available. Some of them are absolutely free of charge. Search that page for the free to use words.

rather than such a long list of "all" legit anti-spyware programs, let me instead suggest two well-respected "short" lists:

and

(steps 7 and 9)

BOTH of these sites recommend the following FREE products:
Ad-Aware SE
Windows Defender
SuperAntiSpyware
AVG AntiSpyware (formerly EWIDO; the ON-DEMAND scanner is fully free)

(and SpyBot Search & Destroy --- an "in addition" comment at Spyware Warrior, where technically it is classified as "useful" )

This may be more a (positive) refection of you practicing "safe-surfing" than a (negative) review that Defender "isn't doing anything"....
Both Joe53 and I can tell you that our anti-spyware scanners seem to catch only "cookies"... but we both do our best to "surf safely"...
and I wouldn't drop a "highly touted" scanner simply because it hasn't found anything for me... yet :smileywink:
