i'm writing from my win ME system, on which mscms.dll is a legitimate Microsoft file, MicroSoft Color Matching System.

It is required by Windows and is used when performing color mapping operations. If mscms.dll is unavailable, Windows will not function correctly.

Having said that:

what alerted you to believe this particular file might be a virus issue?  --- be as specific as possible, in terms of which program alerted you, and what was the exact text of the message.

where is the file located, in terms of its full path (subdirectory) specification; e.g. c:\windows\system32\mscsm.dll

are you experiencing any overt symptoms of virus/malware?

keep in mind that judging the filename, in and of itself, is not foolproof:   it's possible for a virus to tamper with a legitimate file.   when in doubt, you can upload this file to http://virusscan.jotti.org/  or http://www.virustotal.com/ for their analysis by multiple scanning engines.

EDIT:   I am unable to access the virustotal site at this moment... i'm assuming it's a temporary problem
