"Deal Info" Software?? - hijackthis log

Dimension 8400, XPpro SP2. McAfee, Ad-aware, Spybot, CWShredder all up to date.
Have Netscape 7.2 and IE6. Lavalys Everett-Home detects installed program "Deal Info", v2004.1.42.0, no further info but says double-click to remove.

Can't find by file search including hidden and OS files/folders using Windows
file search or dir /s command from C:\ prompt. Ad-aware, Spy-bot, CWshredder don't see it. Ad-ware found/removed 1 tracking cookie; Spy-bot found/removed 5 DSO exploits. Lavasys still reports "Deal Info" installed.

Hijackthis log (after Ad-ware/Spybot removed items noted above):

RoHe,

Have AdAware save a log of the scan, then post that back - with the "Deal Info" entry(s) in it, and let's see if that tell us something.

Ron,

Ok. I'd checkout those registry entries that are being reported. Perhaps there's a piece of 'key' information in those that the program thinks is "Deal Info", while the actual programs and files that cause the 'infection' have long since been removed; like a hive key entry that was in use, while the subkeys containing the problem were removed.

Alot of spyware products seem to be picking up false positives. I'd guess that over time, a inventive hacker could really exploit this, by creating more and more products that decrease the line between a true positive and a false positive.

That can happen when the data portion of the registry entry is removed, leaving the key; in this case, the run entry. You should be able to backup your registry for safe measure, then remove them without any ill-effects.

Mike,
That's the problem, Ad-aware doesn't find "Deal Info". *Only* Lavalys Everest reports it. Cut from EVEREST v1.51.195 installed programs report:
Program Version Installsize
Deal Info 2004.1.42.0 Unknown

Don't know if related, but on startup tab, msconfig lists unnamed item starting at bootup: Startup item (blank), Command (blank), Location HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion\run

I don't see anything obvious in Ad-aware log, but Everest -run after the Ad-aware- says "Deal Info" is there.
Thanks!
Ron

Ron,

Your welcome!

I believe the "Run" registry entry you can safely delete, but check with someone who knows more about those registry entry(s) and what they're for/ do - i'm still studying the registry stuff myself ... :) .

Denny Denham, or someone on the software forum(s) might be able to help you more in that area.

Good luck,

Mike.

Mike,

Thanks for the feedback. I opened Lavalys Everest and double-clicked on installed software "Deal Info" to remove it, but nothing happened. Double-clicking on known software entries brings up query box "Are you sure you want to remove..." So you may be right that "Deal Info" is left over from something already removed. Ran regedit search and found 2 keys for Deal Info:

HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-4186795036-2291062689-4051603708-1007\Software\Microsoft\Installer\Products\843B25AA38603B94EB42D840C2A75C44

and:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserData\S-1-5-21-4186795036-2291062689-4051603708-1007\Products\843B25AA38603B94EB42D840C2A75C44\InstallProperties

Then migrated to registry key for "unnamed" startup  item shown by msconfig on startup tab, and found this:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

(Default)   REG_SZ   (value not set)
SpySweeper  REG_SZ

Never installed SpySweeper and it's not currently on PC so don't know how it got there. Maybe that's where the Deal Info thing came  from.

Any suggestions on how to delete these keys without causing other problems?

Thanks again!

Ron
