Before I give you instructions to clean up the log, please be sure to also check ALL O1 ENTRIES. Because it was displayed the way it is on this site, just know that all O1's are BAD.
So here is the rest of the fix, just remember to check all O1's
We'll need to unload Spybot's Teatimer before we begin. To do this, right-click on the icon in the quick launch toolbar at the bottom on the screen, then select " Exit".
Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ntddetect] C:\WINDOWS\System32\ntddetect.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [System] C:\WINDOWS\System32\kernels32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [ntddetect] C:\WINDOWS\System32\ntddetect.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [SystemTools] C:\WINDOWS\System32\kernels32.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ntddetect] C:\WINDOWS\System32\ntddetect.exe
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
... (Unless you've set these with a anti-spyware program like SpyBot's Immunize feature, have HiJackThis fix this.)
Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click " Fix checked".
Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:
files...
C:\WINDOWS\System32\ntddetect.exe

I have tried to do what you say but cannot find ntddetect.exe - I have ntddetect.dat
Also I'm using agv anti virus software and it keeps giving me lots of alerts that I have a virus, but healing the virus seems not to work. The files that agv pics up on are vxh8jkdq8.exe (and others similarly named) and gpsresl.exe and xmad.exe they are all in the system32 folder.
anyway here's the log

We'll need to unload Spybot's Teatimer before we begin. To do this, right-click on the icon in the quick launch toolbar at the bottom on the screen, then select " Exit".
Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://g.msn.com/0SEENUS/SAOS01
F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\kernels32.exe
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{4A5EA216-C712-493F-B077-8D2D093B3B45}: NameServer = 69.50.184.85,195.225.176.31
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{60D80E43-9D93-491A-A72E-2DB925398677}: NameServer = 69.50.184.85,195.225.176.31
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{91F442D9-762E-4029-8C2E-90B0BA21F7EC}: NameServer = 69.50.184.85,195.225.176.31
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{95E107B8-2A49-44F7-A251-66458372C864}: NameServer = 69.50.184.85,195.225.176.31
...( Verify that these ip addresses are for your isp's DNS Servers, if so, don't 'fix' these.)
Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click " Fix checked".
Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:
files...
C:\WINDOWS\System32\kernels32.exe
-
Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're ' in use', try deleting them from " Safe Mode".
Reboot and post back a new log, and let me know how everything goes.

I've deleted kernel32.exe - now I get a message when I reboot saying thats its missing.
sorry if this sounds dumb but how do I go about verifying the ip addresses are for my isp's dns servers? (to be honest I only roughly even understand what that means!) - my browser does NOT get redirected onto other websites (if that's relevant).
here's the log file
thanks,

anyway the ip addresses mean nothing (so I looked up atrivo and everything I saw looked bad - spam, exploits, adware) so I selected them and got them fixed. Still getting the messages about my computer being at risk but they've changed from being in a window into being in a little balloon from the icons at the bottom left of the screen. Also still getting messages about gsresl.exe (a trojan according to avg)
anyway, here's the logfile your help is much appreciated!

Do a search for it using your explorer search function to find where it is located in the system. If I know where it is I can kill it.
I am not sure at this point what that balloon is related to.
Maybe this file.
Steve
post back the location of that file in this thread

I have been told that it sounds like WinXP warning about something.
Is the warning about suspicious activity or unknown protection program status(eg:Firewall, AntiVirus). Or if the balloon is related to Swipespy.com.

First, download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet *NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.
Download, install, and update Ewido Security Suite
- Install ewido security suite
- Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
- The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
- The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.- On the left hand side of the main screen click update
- Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. After the updates are installed, exit EwidoReboot into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.
Once in Safe Mode, Run Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
After you're done running Cleanup! follow the instructions below
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
- Click Save report
- Save the report to your desktop
Reboot into normal mode.Go to Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs and remove the following if found:
SpySheriff
Exit Add or Remove Programs.
Delete the following, in bold, if found:
C:\Program Files\ SpySheriff -whole folder
C:\Windows\ Desktop.html
C:\ winstall.exe
RIGHT-CLICK HERE and go to Save As (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download the smitfraud reg to your desktop.
Double-click smitfraud.reg on your desktop. When asked if you want to merge with the registry click YES. After the merged successfully prompt, please reboot your computer.
You should be able to change your desktop back to normal now.
Navigate to this folder using Windows Explorer:
C:\Windows\ Prefetch
Delete ALL files inside of the Prefetch folder (do NOT delete the folder, just the files inside).
Post the report from Ewido and a new HiJackThis log into this topic.

I still have messages coming up in windows telling me to go to some website (winregfix.com)to get spware removed but I haven't seen messages in balloons for a while. Also I still can't use task manager - 'has been disabled by administrator'
Also my comptuer is running very slow now - when I boot up sometimes everything freezes so badly I have to turn it all off and try again.
anyway heres the report and logfile:

Let's continue on with the fix...
-
Be sure to look this solution over before you begin. There are a some item(s) I'm not familar with. If you recognze any, then just omit them from this fix.
Run HiJackThis and click " Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click " Fix checked".
Reboot and post back a new log, and let me know how everything goes.

hi, I emptied the ewido quarantine bin but didn't find any of those things to fix in hjt. Something I have noticed is this; in the program files folder there are two messenger folders, msn messenger and one just called messenger. you can see references to them in the logfile - what's that all about? it seems a little strange to me....
here's the log file

Make sure that all files are not hidden when doing a search for that file.
