jhook53,

Dell does not support Windows 7 on this 11 year old computer. This means there are no Windows 7 drivers for the Vostro 200. We have no idea if it will work.

If I do try to update to Windows 7 ......

what problems might I run into......the window adviser for 7.....show compatible...

the only reference to no info was the Internet card.....Intel 82562v - 2........do you have any info on this card ..working with Windows 7...

At times I feel it's a shame just to trash a computer ...if you can't upgrade it

thanks

Even though its not supported windows 7 works.

There won't ever be any 7 drivers but that doesn't matter.

You can use Vista Drivers.

Bios should be done in xp

Much as I dislike Windows 10, I would put your time into upgrading to Windows 10.

For all the old laptops that I have upgraded, I haven't run into any major problems.

Microsoft is dropping support for Windows 7 in Jan 2020.

That NIC works with Windows 7. Microsoft will have a driver inbuilt into it's Operating System however Intel have a newer Windows 7 driver here:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/18713/Ethernet-Intel-Network-Adapter-Driver-for-Windows-7-?product=76951

Windows 7 is nearing it's end of life however (mainstream support has already ended) so you should consider installing Windows 10 instead (If you have a Windows 7 Key it should work with Windows 10). The cost of a new Windows 10 License (Windows 7 is no longer sold) may be more than the hardware is worth however.

Greetings ...thanks again.....

I,live in a senior community..were I help people with there computers....They  have " Struggling" Windows XP ( were they can't use I.E. anymore ...but do have Chrome that's which is still useable on XP..( I know there are NO upgrades ) ......., 7 , 8 ( 8.1 ) still uses I.E. ..so that's good for them..... ...those who can afford get a Windows 10 are stuck with that computer till it goes dead......

I Don't  know for sure if upgrading is better then spending more for a NEW computer Windows 10 ........many are limited by budget....

upgrading XP to Windows 7 ..does offer a lower cost to them...for a while ...tho if Windows 10 will work that would be great....

Most have a decent processor ....so that should be ok....but would like to see  a Windows 10 upgrade advisor.....

so any help is greatly appreciated......

The reason I am upgrading to Windows. 7 ...it's not bog down like Windows 10 .....

Plus ...I haven't found a Windows advisor for Windows 10 ...like the one for Windows 7 .....to check compatible.......

Right now Windows 7 is a good choice....tho if I can find out if my computers can be upgraded to Windows 10 ...great.......Just not sure of specifications...going from Windows .....XP , 7 , 8 ....to 10...,

I have searched Microsoft...but can't find what are the compatibility requirements are..

again thanks......have a great day

Firefox ESR is still viable for XP.

http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/52.9.0esr/win32/en-US/

52.9.0esr was the last supported release for Windows XP and Windows Vista. No further security updates will be provided for those systems.

Firefox ESR 52.9.0 support ended on 28 August 2018.

10 works but you would want a GPU and 4 gigs of ram.  7 or 10 will be horrible with 2 gigs of ram.

The other ugly issue now is that there will not be any fixes or microcode updates for BIOS related to Spectre and Meltdown for these older systems.

The fallout from the Meltdown and Spectre security flaws continues to plague Intel. According to the last update (April 2, 2018) of the “Microcode Revision Guidance,” Bloomfield, Bloomfield Xeon, Clarksfield, Gulftown, Harpertown Xeon C0 and E0, Jasper Forest, Penryn/QC, SoFIA 3GR, Wolfdale, Wolfdale Xeon, Yorkfield, and Yorkfield Xeon families of processors will not receive the updates.

A second hand OptiPlex 7010 which has a Windows 7 Pro OEM License (with Free Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro) is often cheaper than a Windows 10 Retail License or Windows 7 Retail License (which are no longer sold).

Most systems that run Windows 7 can run Windows 10. You can also install Windows 10 without a Product Key if you want to test them before purchasing a license. The Vostro 200 should run Windows 10 64 Bit. I had put some notes on Windows 7 64 Bit drivers a while ago here:

http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/driver-sets/vostro-desktops/vostro-200-windows-7-64-bit/

Windows 10 will likely have all the drivers you need inbuilt.

Newer models will have BIOS updates for SPECTRE and Meltdown and come with windows 10 for the same price as buying windows alone.

Most systems that run Windows 7 can run Windows 10.

This is true HOWEVER there are "ISSUES".

I have been working with people to get them to get up to 10.

The first issue is with Ancient systems.  LAHF/SAHF  CMP XCHG 16 and other instructions are REQUIRED to run 64 bit windows 10.   32 Bit windows 10 still works fine on ancient Dell towers like the Optiplex GX620 tower.

Systems eariler than 2006 are not viable because they do not have EMT64 or NX or many other instructions as well as being limited to 2 gigs of ram OR LESS.

My friend for example had problems with a Latitude E5400

Which worked fine with windows 7 and 2 gigs of ram.  64 Bit Windows 10 is pointless on these DDR2 systems because the chipset supports 4 gigs total ram max AND 512 megs is stolen for the video.  So even with 64 bit os max useable ram is 3.2 to 3.5 gigs total ram. So starting with an 1803 dvd 64 bit doesnt work just shows 4 blue squares and hangs there.  32 bit 1803 works but must be set to ATA mode NOT AHCI because the newer intel RST driver does not support older ICH chipset and worse it hangs or  boots with the AHCI sata mode gobbling up 100 percent of the cpu which means rebooting takes forever if it works at all.  This is one of the causes of black screen of death.  Setting the Sata operation to ATA gets much further.  Updating the bios in XP or 7 is highly recommended BEFORE updating to 10.  Updating bios while in windows 10 is a very very very very very very very very very bad idea.  You have been warned.
