Cannot Create USB Recovery

I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 13-7352 from Best Buy and I am having some issues with the computer out of the box. I was under a heavy debate with myself on whether to make a switch to Apple with this recent purchase. My main decision for this purchase was based purely on the availability of upgrades to the system. I was really looking for a system with a solid state drive, but I decided that it shouldn't be too hard to upgrade the system with a solid state drive. Before making my purchase I verified that the system would be upgradable with a solid state drive (research on Crucial.com). Along with the purchase of the laptop, I bought a PNY 128GB solid state drive.

Since purchasing the laptop I have been unable to install the solid state drive as I am unable to create a recovery in order to install the operating system on the new drive. When I attempt to create a USB recovery I receive the error "We can't create the recovery drive: A problem occured while creating the recovery drive". There is no other information or code along with this error. I am using a flash drive with at least 16GB of storage. I have tried to use a different flash drive and have tried using a different USB port. I have tried creating the recovery in a clean boot environment (disabling starup items, disabling all non-microsoft services, and restarting the system). I have also recovered the system from the recovery partition and retried all previous troubleshooting. I have also searched the Dell and Windows technical support pages and while I have found that other users are experiencing the same problem, there is no solution posted (answers.microsoft.com/.../be343c15-b2bf-4c62-ad10-e6b79dc29be9 ; commweb-ps3.us.dell.com/.../19646511). I am not sure if this is related, but I did find an error in Event Viewer stating "Cryptographic Services failed while processing the OnIdentity() call in the System Writer Object. Details: AddLegacyDriverFiles: Unable to back up image of binary Microsoft Link-Layer Discovery Protocol. System Error: Access is denied."

I also came accross an issue as I was attempting to submit an email to Dell support on this issue where my wireless adapter became disabled. When I went into the Network Adapter Settings I was unable to enable the wireless apapter. If I rebooted the system, it seemed to resolve the issue for a short time. I then uninstalled the McAfee that was pre-installed on the system and this did not resolve the issue either.

I would really like to get this issue resolved as soon as possible as I have purchased this laptop for work and would like to be able to use it as intended. Yes, I understand that the computer is technically working properly except for the recovery drive tool. However, I don't want to have to install and configure the laptop multiple times before I get to use it. I do really like this laptop and would hate to have to take it back to purchase an Apple.

I just bought  a Dell xps 8700 and have not installed anything except updates, including Microsoft large update.  I cannot create the usb recovery drive.  it starts and stops  saying ' we cannot create the recovery drive'.  only 6. 47 GB are written.  i have done this multiple times with different 32 GB memory sticks and using different ports.  I am thinking the hidden recovery partition is defective.

What do I do??

thanks -  but this is not my issue.   Dell is sending me a USB flash drive with the recovery files.  It is a known issue in the software that makes the recovery drive

I experienced the same issue, but after doing two things was able to create the USB drive. (I was dealing with two issues, and didn't attempt to create the disk until I had completed both steps, so I'm not sure if the first step would have done it.)  You might want to do the first step then attempt to create the recovery thumbdrive. If it doesn't work, then also try the second step.

First, search for "Create a Restore Point." On the "System Protection" tab, click on the Configure button and make sure "System Protection" is turned on. After turning on System Protection, try creating the USB recovery disk.

If you still aren't able to create a USB recovery disk, download Malware Bytes Anti-malware software. It's free and was a recommended download on Microsoft's website for a browser hijaak I was experiencing.  I ran the software while in safe mode, then deleted the "potentially suspicious" files it identified. As soon as I did that, I attempted to create the recovery thumbdrive and was successful. I did not experience any adverse effects from deleting the files.

dmaddox - just wonder if you tried all this after or before the windows 10 updates that were release a few weeks ago?  I had the issue before this, and received the usb drive from Dell.  I can tell you that my system restore protection was on when I tried making the recovery flash drive.

Hi,

Please try the steps given below :-

In the search bar, type: command then right click cmd.exe on the menu and select "Run as Administrator". This will open a command prompt window.

Type the command: cd C:\Recovery\OEM then press the Enter key.

Type the command: del install*.* then press the Enter key. (Dont include the asterisk symbol which means after install give a space type . (dot)

Press the "Y" key then press the Enter Key.

Type the command: EXIT and then press the Enter key. (This will close the command prompt window.)

You should now be able to create a USB recovery drive for Windows 10.

I've tried everything else suggested and your solution worked.  THANK YOU!

As of May, 2016, this is still an issue.  The resolution (at least for me) was to uninstall the McAfee that was factory installed, which I did not want anyhow.  As soon as I did that, the recovery media created properly.

I thought I would throw this in just if someone was currently having problems.

I have an XPS 2720 which came pre-installed with Win 10.  Because it was pre-installed, a complete reset has the ability to reinstall the OEM utilities which came with the system.

I had been trying for two days to make a Recovery Drive and could not.  After looking at the log in Windows\Logs\RecoveryDrive I noticed errors when it tried to copy over the Recovery\OEM folder to the flash drive.   I will list the good and bad setuperr.log later so you can see the difference.

I had changed the partition configuration on the 2 TB HDD so I decided to set it back to the original configuration.  The Recovery Drive now creates without problems.

Other things which I have seen causing problems are a SFC which will not complete without error and a "Reagentc /info" listing which does not contain the path to Windows Recovery Tools.

Good Setuperr.log

I have an XPS 2720 which came pre-installed with Win 10.

That is a Early 2013 model and hence should have came with Windows 8.1 preinstalled. Windows 10 was released in Mid 2015 after this model was sold.

Worked for me.  This should be done during the product build, not by users.

As suggested above, I did the "Create a Restore Point", but saw no way to assure System Protection was on; however, the completion pop-up said at top "System Protection." This was followed by the message: "restore point was created."

A short while later, I started the Create a Recovery Drive program. It proceeded and apparently finished, but without stating that it was actually done and successful. The progress pop-up just disappeared. The Properties of the flash drive indicate 13.5 GB has been used. How can I make sure it got completed?

I have some logs that may be related (they are Greek to me). I can post them if interested.

I had the same problem on my Dell laptop with trying to create a Recovery flash drive, until I turned off my Malwarebytes. Then it worked fine. Use a FAT32 formatted 32G flash drive.

So far this is the only thread with real things to try.

reagentc /info

I tried the del install .

My reagentc info says it's Enabled - so I guess that is good - BUT

So far nothing

One person said they needed to reboot with the USB in the computer (don't know why)

I tried that and still no good.

TOOLS:

Dell Inspirion 17-7779

SanDisk 32 GB (FAT32) (new from Best Buy)
