Backup and Recovery Manager in Windows 8

I tried to create the recovery discs in the Backup and Recovery Manager.  The software would only make the first disc then hang up.  All other empty discs inserted are shown as full. I am trying to burn to DVD+R discs.  The Backup app had updated itself to the latest version.

Contacted Dell support.  At first the representative did not know what Backup and Recovery Manager is or does until I showed it to him on a remote connection.  He claimed it is a Microsoft problem even though this is Dell software.  Representative said that since Microsoft does not include disc burning software in Windows 8, the Recovery Manager will not properly burn discs. (I could make the backup to a USB drive.)

Contacted Microsoft; they laughed because this is Dell software, but helped me look at this anyway.  After 2 hours of watching the software fail to work, the representative told me to call Dell again.  He said I need to download and reinstall the software.

Evidently, the software does not properly release the drive after the first disc is burned and then shows any subsequent discs as being full.  When the second disk is inserted, it is read as not having any space and then is ejected.

This is a good workaround, if your laptop has a DL burner.  The Inspiron 15Z Ultrabook optical drive only handles standard DVD's and not the DL's.

I faced same problem with Dell backup and recovery ,I was able to 1st DVD but not other,my laptop was ejecting 2nd DVD again and again .When I called customer care they blamed Microsoft for this technical problem. They told me to use a 16GB pen drive to make recovery media. But since the data for recovery disc was only 7.61 GB I decided to try with a Double-Layered (DL) DVD(8.5 GB Capacity~7.91GB) .

It finally worked!!!

So if u want to make recovery disc, use a DL disc.:)

I went to find a way to back my new Win 8 Latitude 10 Tablet up optically by discovering the method below as the utility corrupted my 8GB flash drive and I had to repair it using the windows disk management utility.

There is a way to trick the utility into using optical media, as it is supported in the applications and drivers selection below the recovery selection.

  1. Click on the option to back up the drivers and applications
  2. Select Discs
  3. select the options to agree and continue.
  4. Let the utility discover the optical drive.
  5. Click on the recovery backup option
  6. The selection for disks will now appear
  7. select this option and continue
  8. Let the utility rediscover the optical drive.

Even though the note says Dual Layer discs are not supported it will work. Let the utility run it will go through the file write and verification process Ok , BUT the ability to eject the disk is still an issue.  While in the verification process, listen for the optical drive to finish and be idle. It will take several minutes to verify the data write.  When finished (the drive stops) open file explorer and you will see that the bootable media is created and all files are on the disk.  Manually eject the disk and you should be in good shape.

I have not tried the disk yet. And I am going to try again with the flash drive and just to be sure use the recimg utility that backs up the system, aps and drivers only,

Let me know if this helps as it worked for me.

Ultrabook 15Z with Windows 8 - been working on this since 11/29

Most recent contact with Dell (from this forum) suggested a bios update was needed.  There is no update on the Dell site for this computer.

All other updates were run, though several on the Dell site that were identified for this machine are older than the ones already loaded from the factory.  I did not run these.

The issue has been "elevated" again and the problem referred to Research?

Backup and Recovery Manager will still not burn past the 1st disc when making the recovery media.

I can't get the Windows 8 Dell Backup & Recovery Manager on a new Inspiron 14z to see any backup devices: neither DVD drive or USB: it just hangs. So I'm unable to create backup or recovery media. The responses you have had so far from Dell are a disgrace.

A Dell employee gave me the link to the latest BIOS update for the Inspiron 15z.  Ran the update but the problem still exists, only the first disc will burn while creating the recovery media.

Uninstalled Backup and Recovery Manager, then reinstalled it.  Still, only the first disc will burn, then the system rejects any other discs.

I am also having issues with this with my new inspiron 17R SE... It will write the first DVD and will not detect the second DVD and it will not pick up any flash drive. Not to mention the fact that anymore than  8GB of ram is "not supported." You mean to tell me that this OEM intel ivy bridge board won't support more than 8GB of ram? Sounds like some hacked up bios limitation to me. Not to mention the buying process, no one was able to answer any of my very BASIC questions do your phone support people realize they sell computers or are they too busy reading from a script?  This is the first and last purchase I will ever make with Dell, business and personal purchases included.

After running the BIOS update from A00 to A02 none of my USB ports work.  I am going to see if I can flash it back.  This just gets better and better.

I am calling them today to get a refund on the Inspiron New 17r, 5721.  Not only am I having the same problem with not being able to create recovery media, the fan also runs constantly maxed out at 5700 RPM and their tech support tells me "there is no problem because it passes diagnostics", and that they "don't have a record of this being a problem".  Maybe they should read their own forums, because many people with the 5721 are having the same exact fan problem.

To top it off, I decided to do a factory restore to see if that would solve ANY of my issues with this piece of junk and it won't even perform the restore process.  Tells me there is an error resetting the PC.

I have been personally and directly responsible for helping friends and clients purchase literally SCORES of Dell computers over the last several years, not to mention being a key person at my place of emploment responsible for standardizing on Dell computers for all of our PC purchases since 2000.  This includes many hundreds of Dell systems being deployed during that time.  All I can say is that I'm going to be royally ticked off if they attempt to deny my right to return it with the 21 day period and/or charge a restocking fee.

Done.  Thankfully they issued a refund with no problem.  Gonna think long and hard about my next attempt at a laptop upgrade.

I would love to do a refund but I'm outside of my 21 days :( If something doesn't happen soon they're going to know me on a first name basis...

After about 7 hours of remote connection to Dell, with 2 different Tech support persons, Dell had my motherboard replaced.

This solved the issue with dead usb ports (as reported above).

However, Backup and Recovery Manager still will not create the recovery discs!

I plan to post on the Customer Care forum just to outline my experience the Dell support, good and bad.  Then, I plan to not waste any more time with Dell.
