Dell issued an update to the Backup and Recovery Manager software today. I hoped that this would resolve the issue with it only burning the first disc and then stopping. It did not. Only the first disc will burn then all others are rejected.
All my Dell technical contacts are "so sorry, and realize that I am frustrated".
I was able to finally create the System Recovery Media and Drivers, Utilities and Applications Media using USB sticks. I couldn't use the same stick for both so I had to purchase a second USB stick. I had previously tried with DVD media and had no luck. I purchased the upgrade to the software to see if this would help; it didn't. I removed and reinstalled the software; still didn't help.
My issue now is that even though I have a Dell branded external hard drive, the software won't back up my system to anywhere but my internal hard drive. It can see the external drive, it just won't use it as a backup location.
Does anyone know where the software stores the backup file on the hard drive?
After contacting Dell support for this same problem I was informed for my Inspiron 660 that it requires DVD-R, not +R discs to do the backup. I don't have any at home to test yet but will be getting some to see if that is the solution for my problem.
I just bought a new Inspiron 3421 and am experiencing the same problems. Why does Dell ship out laptops still with this issue if it has been known for months??
My DVD -R worked fine. I used 4.7gb discs and used four of them. I used Maxell brand. I didn't try DVD -R DL simply because I screwed up and ordered the wrong ones.As a secondary backup I'm looking to purchase a USB drive as well. not sure the exact size though. This backup was 12.x GB. Don't remember the exact size. But I think the USB size is around 8.
I tried using DVD-R but got the same response as always. The first disc would burn then all others were rejected.
If your computer is still under warranty request a replacement or refund due to bad hardware. Dell does not acknowledge that the software has a problem, therefore the internal DVD drive must be bad.
Don't let them do what they did to me. They "elevated" the problem several times getting me to wait expecting an answer then when the warranty expired it was not their problem.
I also completed the backup using an external USD DVD drive. So, it must be an issue with certain OEM drives installed in laptops. However, I have not had an issue with reading and writing for normal data copying.
I have the same problem on my XPS 27. The first disk worked but subsequent disks do not. I have not been able to make a successful backup of recovery media using the Dell Backup and Recovery.
Well, I was able to generate a windows 8 backup on my USB drive. Also generated a Windows 7(?) recovery disk. System crash, Windows 7 recovery disk not booting, and window 8 USB drive states that it needs a driver to read ????? Also, no information on DELL, Microsoft, or anywhere about how to do multiple windows 7 and window 8 backups on my 1TB usb drive...Can I/Can't I .... How? ... I love that all these issues are being TOTALLY IGNORED on ALL Forums in Microsoft and Dell. Dell seems to think the solution is to use Dell Recovery System... not an answer since they sold me the USB hard drive to do my backups on. I have purchased my last DELL, no offense to other countries, but when DELL sent thier customer service overseas, the people are not empowered to help with anything ... it is Blame Windows or Charge money to get extra help... like having no customer service at all. Microsoft support does likewise ... "contact your manufacturer or pay me $$$" ANDROID is looking better and better...no more Dell or Windows...if I have to learn EVERYTHING New...on my own...I am ready to scrap it all and find support elseware....Bye Bye Dell...Bye Bye...Microsoft and Buy Buy Android. Sorry...Warning...Trying to backup both windows 8 images and windows 7 images on 1 usb drive lost access to all data on that drive...even after partitioned. Would like to find a solution here, but Dell must have scrapped problem resolutions. Shame, used to be a good company.

From my experience with any of the Dell Backup programs. They don't like the partitions being changed. They also don't like it if an OS has been manually installed. Hence personally I would much rather just have a Windows Reinstallation DVD or downloadable .iso. When I do I usually wipe the Dell with DBAN and manually install it.
For Windows 7 I have been recommending the use of .isos from Digital River for clean installation as its too hard and/or time consuming to obtain the media from Dell and expect to have a downloadable solution. For Windows 8, Microsoft removed this option and instead providing a download that can only be used on a previous (working version of Windows) after payment. There is no free direct download to a .iso which the customer can use for clean installation. See Windows Reinstallation Guide and its associated notes on media which explain the problem in more detail. If you don't have the Reinstallation DVD from Dell phone them and request it.
I know what you talking about, OH DO I. I Bought this New Dell inspiron 15 Windows 8 in May 2013, I have had so much problems! I Looked all over the Web for help, Done all that was to do, Nothing Helped, So I called Dell The Tech remote logged into my Laptop, He did nothing just had me type in answers to his Questions And WOW! Well to my Surprise even as it was still under warrenty, Dell wanted to charge me $289.59 To Do what? It is still under warrenty But He said a bunch of stuff about parts, software, And Mumbo Jumbo, No one but a Geek could under stand. ( I Guess) So I did what I should have done in the first place, Called the place where I bought So with these Great People they under stand And Swppted My New Dell for Another New Laptop of my choice, Great People over the Internet, ONLY If they really care about their Customers

If your external or any of your internal hard drives are Western Digital or Seagate, then use the WD Acronis version or Seagate DiscWizard (Seagate Acronis) version which are essentially the same program and is an alternateve to Dells utility.
