I was only able to complete the backup process by using an external panasonic writer. This suggests there's nothing wrong with the software and may be a hardware issue.

The link you supplied is for DataSafe 2.0 applicable to Windows 7.  The problem is is with Backup and Recovery Manager app in Windows 8.

The laptop is an Ultrabook 15z purchased directly from Dell and is "right out of the box".

I had read the article in the link regarding Backup and Recovery Manager after encountering the problems with my system.  This only describes how to use the app and some of its features.  I followed all the steps as outlined in it but got the problem that I previously outlined in the first post.

I can see from the additional posts on this problem with Backup and Recovery Manager that I am not the only one having the problem.  Is Dell working on this?  Since the software does not work, can we request free media from Dell?

Skip the dell software and use windows backup programs instead. There are 2 backup programs in win 8--Windows 7 File Recovery for compatibility with win 7 backups and File History. You will be able to make repair disks with win 7's uility. An external hard drive is recommended for system images and backups.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I see that the Win 7 utility makes either a system image or a repair disc.  The Win 8 utility can make the recovery backup but only to a USB drive, it does not offer the optical drive option.  Interesting that you can't make the recovery discs on DVD's.

Dell refused my request for recovery media even though the back up software does not work.

All the technical representatives that I have been in contact with continue to tell me to use Data Safe Local to back up my laptop.  This software is not installed on Windows 8 systems.

I give up - I will try to find 3rd party software to complete this task.

I have the same problem.  I just received my 17r i7 3d model today.  This is the first thing I've tried to do on this computer.  If they don't fix it within 2 days I am sending it back.  I shouldn't have to pay a restocking fee if it's faulty either within the 21 day return.

Good luck, I still have no response from Dell even though the issue has been "elevated".  My computer works fine there is just no way to create the recovery media on discs.

I am also having the exact same problem. Is your problem resolved?

I also have the same problem, first "job" I tried to do was make these recovery disks. In my case it runs for about 7 minutes

writing files then stops with a message:-

 "An Error Occurred"

Useful that, What do we do now0? Perhaps if they haven't come up with a solution within the next 7 days I just send it back and complain to Trading Standards, "Sales of Goods Unfit for Purpose". I think in the UK we have a right to send it back under the distance Selling Laws as it is unfit for purpose.

However, I'd rather have an answer to the original question!

I have been trying to create recovery disks with a brand new Dell 15R 7520 Turbo(Special Edition)  running windows 8.

it creates the first disk, and then stops.  I insert a second disk and it just keeps ejecting the disk.

i have tried different DVD-r media and same thing happens

after successfully written the first disk ,asked for a second disk

insert second blank DVD-r disk,

no error message just ejects it, and dell backup and recovery program just hangs.
