Remove Windows 8 for another OS
I received a Dell 3520 today for Christmas & absolutely hate Windows 8. With the new hardware/software interface, how do I remove Windows 8 and still have a viable machine?

Hi sosborne_ak,
You would not be able to just remove the Windows 8 operating system as you need to have an Operating system on the computer. You have an option to install Windows 7 on your computer so let me know which Operating system you would like to have. I request you to send the system model and system service tag through private message so that I can check and let you know what needs to be done.
I have added you as a friend. Please accept my friend request by clicking on my name highlighted in blue and then click on “Friends” tab at the top and then click on “Request to Review” and finally click on “Accept” button.
I am sending you a private message as well. Click on “Inbox” to respond to the message and provide system’s Service Tag and contact details so I may access your system records and check for further course of action. You could also click on Start Conversation to send a private message.

Hello @DELL-Kiran K,
Thank you for your reply; I looked in both my INBOX and my FRIENDS area and did not see any conversations or invites, not sure if I am looking in the wrong place.
What my specific question concerns is the UEFI function that ties the OS to the hardware through a check; I have read that several manufacterers have made it mandatory to use specific operating systems through the check bit

If you have WIn 8 Pro, you have downgrade rights to Win 7 but basic Win 8 doesn't have downgrade rights.
Have you considered trying the Start8 utility ($5) from Stardock with a 30-day free trial, before downgrading to Win 7? And no, I don't work for Stardock or Dell!
I absolutely, positively hated Win 8 when I first started using it but Start8 gave me back a real Start menu just like in Win 7. What a relief! I could find my way around again and do thngs my way, not Microsoft's crazy way. I'm slowly getting acquainted with the Win 8 "modern" start page, but I won't be giving up Start8 any time soon.
If you do decide to downgrade to Win 7, may I suggest you create an image of the hard drive on external media (eg, USB hard drive or DVDs) first so you can easily revert to Win 8, if you eventtually decide to give it another go...
EDIT: Natakuk types faster than I do, but we seem to have the same recommendations. :emotion-21:

Before committing a lot of time for a reinstall of Windows 7.
Please note that Windows 8 Professional needs to be preinstalled on your system in order to downgrade to Windows 7 Professional otherwise a separate license of Windows 7 is required due to Microsoft's license agreement: http://www.microsoft.com/oem/en/licensing/sblicensing/pages/downgrade_rights.aspx#fbid=zIWc7FsSkgz
You may also consider installation of Start8 in order to return to a similar user interface to Windows 7. http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/

Another option to try is a program called "Classic Shell" which is free, and in my opinion is a better choice than Start8.
