Studio XPS 1645 and Windows 8 64-bit - missing "Base System Device" drivers
I have just bought a diskless XPS1645 and have clean-installed Win8.1. All is well, apart from...
1. Device Manager shows two Base System Devices that remain 'undriven' - could anyone suggest what the items may be and what drivers are required?
2. The volume and DVD eject buttons don't. (The Wireless button definitely does.) Suggestions?
Many thanks.

VEN_1180 is Ricoh and the only thing Ricoh in this system is the card reader. The driver I mentioned:
http://ftp.dell.com/chipset/R234107.exe
should be the drivers for these base system devices. If installation of it did not remove these then manually update the driver for both devices by pointing to C:\Dell\Drivers see here for more details:
http://philipyip.wordpress.com/unofficial-driver-sets/checking-hardware-ids-in-the-device-manager/driver-installation-via-the-device-manager/
Bluetooth I believe was optional so you might not have a bluetooth card. If you are sure you have one, try tapping Fn and F2 a few times to see if you can toggle Bluetooth radio on and off, you may wish to leave the device manager maximised while doing this to see if there are any changes. It needs to display in the device manager before installing drivers.
If that fails you may need to go to the BIOS setup and disable it, then load Windows and then power down repeating the process but enabling it. To enter the BIOS setup press F2 immediately when powering up the machine.
The Bluetooth Card is the Dell Wireless 370 and is a Broadcom device. The Broadcom Bluetooth Update should install the correct drivers for it.

Likely one is the card reader:
http://ftp.dell.com/chipset/R234107.exe
Provide hardware IDs for the other devices, see here:
http://philipyip.wordpress.com/unofficial-driver-sets/checking-hardware-ids-in-the-device-manager/
Install Dell Quickset it should hopefully get functionality of the buttons back although might not work totally correctly in Windows 8.1:

Progress! Thank you Natakuc4, the R272666 download you've suggested now means that the volume and eject buttons are working.
The card reader I already have working, so I've followed your Wordpress site and been able to extract the following info about the two Base System Device problems. The first one yields this:
PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_E852&SUBSYS_02FE1028&REV_01
PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_E852&SUBSYS_02FE1028
PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_E852&CC_088000
PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_E852&CC_0880
... and the second one this:
PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_E230&SUBSYS_02FE1028&REV_01
PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_E230&SUBSYS_02FE1028
PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_E230&CC_088000
PCI\VEN_1180&DEV_E230&CC_0880
Typically 1180 doesn't appear in your list! Well, that would be too easy.
One thing I cannot see in the device manager list is anything about Bluetooth. The Bluetooth indicator is alight on the front edge of the 1645, but there's nothing Bluetooth-related appearing in the OS.
Many thanks for your help thus far. At least if I ever have to clean-build this thing again I'll have the drivers before I start.

Great, glad its up and running okay. Windows 8.1 may have the drivers partially installed for the card reader. Not sure what benefit you gained from installing the correct one but it might help with other card types.

Well, that's me told then! Even though the card reader was working, installing R234107 did indeed clear up the last two items on the hardware list - many thanks.
The Bluetooth is of little practical importance, but I'll have a look for the module when I have the bottom off next - I do seem to recall seeing an empty module-sized space in there. Fn-F2 doesn't toggle the front edge light on or off. I'll play with the BIOS in due course, just to see what else I can break..

It will be the card reader, this driver:
