Thank you very much for your advice and efforts.  I really do appreciate the willingness to help on this forum. :)

Microsoft had lost the plot completely. Not even Vista could sour me but Windows 8 and beyond seems to be off at a tangent that will take users on paths better not travelled.  I think that my experience today convinced me to migrate to Linux entirely.  For the record, this humble little Dell performs rather well on various distro's of Linux, such as Zorin, Mint 15 XFCe, Mint 15 MATE 64-bit, Mint 15 Cinnamon (and I made it look like a Mac) as well as PearOS.  All hardware work rather well, there are no compatibility issues, it is immensely robust and stable as well as very safe to use. Some reason that Linux is virtually virus-free because of a much smaller install base.  Truth is that its safety lies in how it works; it would be just as safe even if all 7 billion were using it.

Dell ships with Ubuntu on some models, even on Alienware and I can surely recommend it. The learning curve is there and noobs may need to learn new tricks, but the very same can be said for MS Windows and MS Office.  Best of all is that each and every bit of software comes free of charge and updates are also free.  Upgrading or installing is as easy as ticking a box and a mouse click.  It installs seamlessly and hardly ever do we need a restart.

My Linux does not even ever use more than 1GB RAM and it boots into much less than 180MB!

There is no "URL" from which to download the Windows 8.1 update.  Rather, on your current Windows 8.0 device:

1.  Be sure all of the automatic updates have been applied to your device's current operating system;

2.  Then, go to the Microsoft Store app on your device, and download/install the Windows 8.1 update, FOR FREE.

I have exhausted options as above and my Windows Store only displays a few items, leaving no logical, accessible place to reload/refresh or even search.

Whoever designed Windoze 8 should be fired from his/her desk and exiled to the South pole.

It is so much easier to just use Linux where everything just works............

I have not found a place to download 8.1 on an OEM system i.e. preinstalled by Dell.

I have however found a workaround for a retail license:

Microsoft made this immensely awkward and its something I predicted would happen since Windows 8.0 was released.

There is some hope that Microsoft have maybe taken our negative feedback a lot of folk were upset on Microsoft Answers...

Although I still don't know why they decided to have such foolish deployment of Windows 8.0 and make it even worse with Windows 8.1.

I am trying to download the free Windows 8.1 upgrade, but my computer keeps giving me the message I need administrator access.  This is my personal computer and therefore, I thought I was automatically the administrator by default.  Can anyone help me with this so I can upgrade to Windows 8.1.  Thanks.

upgrade windows 8 single language to 8.1:-

I cannot upgrade to win 8.1 as it says that I am not the admin, where in this is a single user identity and my account is added as Administrator.

Please advice!

Make sure all updates are in place before running the 8.1.1 update. If still unsuccessful, reread this post for the answer.
