Windows 8.1 Pro on GPT partition

Okay, I'm missing something. I have wiped my hard drive and I am installing Windows 8.1 Pro. Main reason is so I can partition my drive as GPT to partake of large USB drives, such as the one waiting patiently on my desk. But I digress. So during the install, I go in and use diskpart to convert the partition to GPT, but when Windows 8.1 has installed, it's back to MBR. My BIOS is set to: Secure Boot disabled, Load Legacy Option ROM: Enabled, and Boot List Option: UEFI. Is one of these settings wrong?

Thanks for any help!

Hi,

Thank you for writing to us!

The settings on the BIOS are correct.Since this is change in BIOS has not helped. You can check if your able to get into command prompt as Administrator and then follow the steps

DISKPART(enter)

list disk (enter)

once the list comes up you can select the disk as seen

Kindly private message the service tag and email address.

Thanks

Robin

I've done that several times and it always reverts to MBR when Windows is installed.

I created a boot disk with Acronis Disk Director 12, and it will not boot up. I do see the Acronis CD during boot, but it stalls while displaying, "Loading the network connection setting." Does that tell you anything that is wrong?

This PC came with Windows 8, but I eventually downgraded to 7, but with a shiny new 4TB external drive, I decided to go to 8.1 Pro with GPT partition. The recovery USB stick that came with the machine will go through the recovery process, but while it was doing that, I was chatting with a Dell service rep who informed me that the original configuration was MBR, so I bailed out.

Hello, the non-UEFI option will boot the device in the legacy BIOS mode. If you have a Win7/8 DVD it can be booted in either BIOS or UEFI mode. If you have a GPT partitioned boot drive then you need to install Windows in UEFI mode. You can disable the fast boot and set secure boot to "other OS" (ie off). Then do the cleaning and convert again. If that’ doesn’t help, in that case, you can please try some third-party software to covert mbr to gpt besides the diskpart.

The settings are wrong. Load Legacy ROMs should be Disabled and SecureBoot should be Enabled. See here for more details:

I would also advise clean installing Windows 10 RS1 opposed to Windows 8.1 See here for details:
