32 Bit Vista shipped w/64 bit processor

I recently purchased an Inspiron 1501 online with an AMD Turion 64 X2 processor, and Dell shipped it to me with Vista Home Premium (which I asked for) but the 32 bit version!  I have been around and around with them about getting it fixed, but no dice yet.  Anybody have any experience with getting this done, so maybe I can get some relief?  Thanks in advance

Dell only offers Vista in 32bit. How did you ask for the 64bit? Most current processors are 64bit capable.

Yeah, I got that from the phone people.  It just seems to make no sense to me for them to send out a 32 bit OS for a 64 bit CPU!  So, I called and told them so.  I also pointed out that there is not posted anywhere in the order form that they only ship 32 bit Windows...plus, while looking around the site, I came across:

about 2/3 of the way down the page they say:

"Dell plans to ship appropriate 32-bit and/or 64-bit versions of all other Windows Vista products as determined by the best customer experience results out of testing."

Just exactly how many 64 bit programs do you have?  Virtually none if any at all.

There are virtually no drivers available and the 32 bit OS will run just as fast, if not faster, according to some sites, than the 64 bit OS.

Its just not Dell, but most of the oem computer companies are installing the 32 bit OS, until as jmwills stated, better driver support comes along.  Its easy to purchase an OEM 64 bit Vista, as I and many others have done if you want it.  You are only paying for the 32 bit OS at time of purchase, so none of use are getting ripped off.

At www.newegg.com the oem 64 bit version cost about $119.00

Hi 19bradford72
Hi have the insprion 1501 it will run Vista 64 bit retail or OEM just fine all of the drivers are there
if you know where to find them .
If you install 64 bit and you need the 64 bit drivers look for them under the XPS 1710
the only drivers that did not install when i install 64 bit Ultimate was the
Rioch MMC Host Controller & the Synaptics PS/2 Port TuchPad drivers and these
are under the 1710 Vista 64 bit section my PC runs just as fast weather it is 32 or 64 bit
some of the Dell software will not run Like the AV & the software i use runs with no problems
at all .
The only reason i use 32 bit is for Dell support and that is it.
Vista 64 bit has to be a clean install only!
Good Luck if you go with 64 bit.
Edit the Dell wireless 1390 mini card installed as a broadcom chip but you can get the Dell driver there also .

Good point...the ONLY 64 bit software I have is Ubuntu linux, 7.04 feisty.  It runs great, so far, haven't tried to do too much with it yet.  My point is, though that it seems ridiculous to have a machine which is capable of moving 64 bits around at a time (really, 128...dual core), and having an OS which only moves 32 (or 64 when multithreading)...

Even Dale Earnhardt puts on the brakes once in awhile.  Knock your self and load XP64.  It's not always about what is the fastest, but is the most stable, secure, and then speed relevant.

I also have the 32 Bit Vista with a 64 Bit processor. I've noticed that the system has slowed incredibly since Vista was installed. Dell in home maintenance had changed my motherboard and processor a while before and he mentioned that he replaced my 32 with a 64 processor but it didn't really register at the time. My question is does a 32 bit OS and a 64 Bit processor cause compatibility problems or should I upgrade my OS again?

There are no isses with running a 32 bit OS on a 64 bit system.  In fact, form what I have read and listed to (Podcasts) the 32 bit actually runs faster than the 64 bit OS on a 64 bit machine.
