32 bit xp or is it 64 bit windows xp
i have trying to determine what windows xp bit version i am running 32 or 64. i have windows xp media professional roll up 2 but has updated too service pack 3. i think i saw an update with a 64 bit patch but i cant find that now.. how could i find out what i have any help would be appreciated....
The reason for wanting to know is ive read 64 bit version will recognize more ddr2 ram. 4gb max on 32 bit and it will recognize 4gb + on 64 bit versions. possibley like windows 7 64 bit. ofcourse it will still read 4gb but it will perform with the extra ram added. so with that being said how can i find which bit version i have...please help thanks.

Right-click My Computer, Properties ... it will say 64-bit after Windows XP, if it is 64-bit. It will say nothing if it is 32-bit.
Another method ... open My Computer, go to C:\ ... if you have only a Program Files folder, then it is 32-bit; if you also have a Program Files (x86) folder, then it is 64-bit.
With 32-bit, you are limited to 4GB of RAM - around 3.0-3.4 usable; with 64-bit, you will see around 3.5-3.7GB usable, depending on your specific system configuration.

You have the 32-bit version.
Windows uses the folder Program Files for its native application support ... the 32-bit version (x86) has only Program Files; 64-bit has a Program Files, but also has a Program Files (x86) folder for 32-bit applications.
32-bit:
64-bit:
Your D960 supports 64-bit, so you could install it (requires a clean/full install), but your 945 chipset is limited to 4GB, so you wouldn't be able to go beyond that limit with your current hardware.

hi flash,
it dosent say 64 after windows professional. i do not see a prgram file x86. but i do know that it has x86 architecture. i did have 3.75gb usable untill i added a 1gb radeon graghics card and now it comes up 3.5gb ram. i do somewhat remember there being an udate for a 64 bit patch not sure on that one though.
ok i have an ole' xps 400 desktop. ofj030 mobo that originally had the pentium d 820 2.8 ghz...but i have the pentium d 960 3.6ghz processor in it now...chipset 945p express. hmmmm... what do think and is there another way to check to be sure....thanks

do you know what mobo chipset would support the 8gb and 960 processor. i think intel shows 975x as the 1st chipset to support 8 gb. but i dont know what board too look for persay like my ofj030. i know they went core 2 duo around that time. any input would help more thanks.

MCE was only available in 32 bit as far as I know.
Right click on My Computer, select properties from the list, under System Type it should say either x86(for 32 bit systems) or X64

Click on Compatible Products for a list of chipsets that support the D960:
