I suggest going to  http://daol.aol.com/software/  and download the latest version.
 
It is called AOL desktop now.

You can download AOL9.1 at the link below.
 
   Uninstall all aol software first, choose to save personal settings to "desktop" during uninstall. You will have a folder called "Organize" on your desktop after uninstalling aol. During install it will put your "Favs and Address book" back,but i don't believe it save emails.
   Not sure if your icon issue is related or if it is another problem all together. It could be "Video Drivers" issues.
