Adobe Acrobat hangs loading pdf files
I have a Wintows XP Dimension. When I try to open a pdf file, Adobe Acrobat 6.0 tries to open, but hangs. I've tried deinstalling/reinstalling Acrobat-- no change. Suggestions, please?

Hi,
When you say "hangs" do you mean that it doesn't load the .pdf file immediatly? If you are on a Dial-up connection and the file is large, it can take seemingly forever for it to open since it will not open until the entire file is downloaded to your system. There's always the situation where the server that you are downloading from isn't working properly and you may never get the whole file to your system so it seems like Adobe Reader is just sitting there doing nothing. Have you tried opening a .pdf file that you have on your Hard drive to see if AR works?
You could go to Adobe Reader and download and install the latest version to see if that helps. Uninstall the old version using Add/Remove Programs utility first.
If you post the link to the file that you are trying to download, someone can check it out to see if there's something wrong with the file or the server.

Hi Steve,
It is Adobe Reader, not Acrobat... (sorry)
In response to your suggestion, I put a shortcut to it on my desktop, prepatory to opening a local file...double-clicking on it leads to an interminable (except by ctrl-alt-delete followed by End Process on "AcroRd32.exe"-- and then a reboot to make sure the dire warnings claimed to apply to such an unseemly (?) end did not ensue...
I have followed your instructions to the letter. Now we know, download is not the issue.

Hi,
It sounds like you either have a bad install or there's some other conflict within your system setup.
Do you get the Acrobat Reader screen up when you open it? If so can you click the Help tab and choose Detect and Repair from the list?
Adobe only has THIS guide for troubleshooting Acrobat, I figure that some of the same issues would occur with the reader. I did have a problem lately with one of the plug-ins that I had to remove--the plugins are located in a sub file in the program folder.
What happens if you go directly to the .pdf that you want to open and double click on it?

Hi Steve,
I had success in the user to user forum for Acrobat reader (select "Reader All Platforms") http://www.adobe.com/support/forums/main.html, and after digging and browsing a lot, I discovered that others besides I had the same problem, related to a TMP/ folder stuffed with 65531 acr*.tmp files-- hosed 'em out, and all was well. Why there were just 4-5 of us... is... one of those humbling questions....

Hi,
Glad to hear that you finally got things straightened out.
From what you describe, you need to do a system cleanup occasionally. THIS method is for Win98 but the basics still apply.
