After XP/Drivers/Software reinstall: Dell subfolders to safely delete?

Hi, All,

I just completed a clean reformat and reinstallation of XP Pro and the proper drivers and basic software on my Inspiron 5150 laptop. (Including 80+ downloads from Microsoft Update!)

I am now in the process of finding and deleting as many of the usual temporary installation files as I am comfortable with deleting, and there are several folders that I am curious about.

I now have two identical folders:

C:\Program Files\Dell\Notebook System Software
C:\Program Files\Dell Computer Corporation\Notebook System Software

Each folder contains 24 folders, with names like Q332179_WXP_SP2_x86_ARA

Are both of these folders necessary for proper operation of my system, or may one or both of them be deleted? Are they actually program files, or are they intallation files or backups?

I am also curious about the folder

C:\Program Files\Dell Computer Corporation\Mobile Pentium 4 Hyperthreading Driver

This folder also contains 24 subfolders, with names like ARA, CHS, etc.

Can anyone tell me what these folders "do", or if they can be deleted?

I am particularly interested in the two identical Notebook System Software folders.

Thanks!!

Ken

You don't need any of these directories. There are also many other directories you don't need at all, as long as you don't want to uninstall any patch from Microsoft. And you don't want, do you? :)

The extra space on your HDD with files you can safely remove is close to 1 GB or more.
But if you have a lot of free space, this might not affect you too much.
