BSOD: "Stop 0x0000007B" error message
Hi Heroes!
I recently got the following error message:
"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\AppPatch\drvmain.sdb
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."
I got the backup disc from Dell (I have to commend Dell on the backup disc service and its speedy, free delivery!) since I lost my original. I did the whole repair thing and rebooted, only to get the BSOD.
This error message is:
stop: 0x00000007B (0xF7A29528, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
I can't get into safe mode. I tried to get into the Recovery Console, but am having difficulties. After selecting which installation I would like to log onto, it prompts the Administrator password. The partition doesn't have a password, so I tried ENTER. "The password is not valid. Please retype the password." I try the administrator password I use to logon to my XP account. Same message. I was planning on running chckdsk /f, but I can't even get into the Recovery Console!
I've done some looking online and it looks like the stop: 0x00000007B error usually also includes some reference to an unmountable drive or the like. I did swap out my old hdd for a new one, but it worked for months with no problems. I ran a ton of diagnostics tests but it looks like all my hardware is fine- everything passed.
Any help you can give me would be much appreciated!

Does that error message say anything else besides what's in your post?

Pmac7,
You can clear the password using either a bootable floppy disk or CD containing Peter Nordahl Hagen's Offline NT Password Editor. Instructions and downloads to create a bootable floppy or CD are here: http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/
I get the Stop: 0x0000007B error message occasionally if I have my wireless mouse USB transceiver plugged into my on-board USB ports. I shut the system down. Unplug the USB transceiver. Start up the system. Reconnect the USB transceiver for my mouse, and all works well. If you have ANY USB devices connected, you might try unplugging them and restarting your system.
Hope this info helps.

Ron, following is the full message:
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed ard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.
Technical information:
***STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7A29528, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Thanks for the reply Tony!
I haven't been using any USB (or other) devices when booting up. I wish it was that easy!
Should I be nervous about using that third party boot/software you recommended? Have you used it before with success and no malware after use?

Unfortunately the stop message doesn't name a specific .sys or .dll which might have made things easier.
Boot from XP CD and press R at first screen to launch Recovery Console, assuming you can.
At C: prompt, type in:
chkdsk c: /p /r
press Enter
(Go take a nice long nap!)
When it's done, remove XP CD and type at c: prompt
exit
press Enter
Hopefully it will boot normally.
If not, boot from XP CD again and press Enter (not R) at first screen.
XP user licence should appear
Accept the license
Choose your installation on next screen (should only be one)
Press R on following screen to launch repair/reinstall
Personal files will be ok but you will have to reinstall all the microsoft updates and fixes (or just SP3) again

Pmac7,
The Offline NT Password program by Peter Nordahl Hagen has been used by myself and others on numerous occasions to gain access to systems (NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Vista) wherein the administrator's password had been changed by malware. The program is Linux based. It is definitely not malware.

Do I understand correctly that you ran the Repair/Reinstall and still get the STOP: 0x0000007B error? Any new info on that BSOD?
Got 2 possible solutions but you're probably not going to like either of them:
1. A very LARGE hammer
2. Reformat and reinstall XP
You may need to mount the hard drive in an external USB enclosure and connect to another PC to see if you can recover your files before reformatting.
Not sure what else to tell you...:(

You can also try running these commands from a CMD window to rebuild the boot sectors, but you will need a bootable CD or DVD so you can get to the C:\ prompt.
C:\
Bootrec.exe /fixmbr
Bootrec.exe /fixboot
Chkdsk /r
Press Enter after each command and wait until it finishes and the C:\ prompt reappears before doing the next one. Then reboot normally.
