Backup system registry

What is the best way to backup the system registry, before i modify the file?

Thanks

Basically the same as any other file.  I have a folder named "Registry" oddly enough within My Documents and whwnever I start tinkering with the Registry, I simply go to File>Save As>Registry (with the date added) and point it to the Folder in my Documents.

tommy92262,

You can back up the entire registry by creating a restore point prior to making any changes. If you are making changes to a specific portion of the registry, you can save a copy of that portion before the modification by highlighting it and going to File|Export. The unmodified section will be saved as a *.reg file and if you need to restore it, simply double-click that file or right-click it and select Merge and it will be reentered to replace the changed section.

When you become more computer-knowlegable you can look at using this free utility. It has gotten good reviews but it's not for novices.

jmwills,

If you use file, export, save as in regedit for the whole registry (i.e. with the my computer icon highlighted), it does not, in fact save the whole registry:

From Maxd' s link:

Note: The "Export registry" function in Regedit is USELESS (!) to make
a complete backup of the registry. Neither does it export the whole
registry (for example, no information from the "SECURITY" hive is
saved), nor can the exported file be used later to replace the current
registry with the old one. Instead, if you re-import the file, it is
merged with the current registry, leaving you with an absolute mess of
old and new registry keys.

It is really intended to save individual keys and subkeys.
