Black screen after xp loading screen

I have just installed win xp with sp2, after installing a wireless card i think was the problem when i reboot after the xp loading screen the screen goes black and stays black. You can still type your login name password in in the black screen and hear the login screen, so everything is working.

If i boot up and hit f8 i can choose enable vga mode then it boots up into windows normally, however i have to set the screen size back to 1026 x 768 etc.

I have tried this on 2 differnt hard drives with the same black screen result, any ideas?

I tried many thing, reinstalled winxp with sp2 about 3 times, turns out there is an option in the bios, says display type or something the options are crt and lcd, ensure it is set to both, so crt + lcd.

i tried a lot of things, that worked and is still working fine ever since. hope it helps you i know how frustrating it can be

Any other ideas on how to fix this problem.  I am having the exact problem and setting the BIOS to Simul mode or CRT+LCD is not fixing the problem.  I have noticed that if I plug a monitor into the laptop I get a display on the monitor and then I can hit the function key + the F8 key to get the display back on the laptop, but I don't want to have to do this everytime.  If anyone could help it would be great.

The only way I was able to solve this is to always boot the computer in VGA mode :-(
I changed boot.ini to do this to have it as the default boot, and just have to always manually change the screen resolution after it has booted up. It's a pain, but works. I wish Dell would address this DEFECT in a driver patch or whatever layer the problem is in....

Its not a windows problem, its a user tampering with bios issue, Thats all it was for me, unless i forgot about something, try in each of the modes then back to both, enable com ports small things like that.
Maybe default setting in bios??

Mine was fixed as soon as i turned the video back to "Both", i tried a lot of other things, was as simple as that,

I know this thread is old, but I had the same problem and found the solution. I wanted to post in this thread so anyone googling the issue could see the fix (If it's not the BIOS setting you mentioned).

For me the culprit was Daemon Tools. It installs two files that are stopping the boot process. D347BUS.SYS and D347BUS1.SYS. If you boot in safe mode it should list all of the .sys files being loaded. When it comes up on these two files it gives you the option to stop loading them by pressing esc. Press esc on both of them and load safe mode as usual. Once your in windows, run regedit (start menu > run > regedit). Do a full search and remove any entries that point to either of these files. Reboot normally. That should fix the problem.

Blank Screen After Installing Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) on a Dell Inspiron 2500

Yay! After 4 hours of Googling I found the answer on the DELL AP support site!!!

Simply go to the Monitor tab on the Advanced display properties page and UNTICK the "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display" tickbox!!! Go figure! Aggh!

I had previously tried *everything* - updating the BIOS to A15, reinstalling the display drivers many times, playing with BIOS settings and looking for suggested filenames in the registry (not found).

Definitely suggest updating BIOS and installing the latest Intel 82815 display drivers from DELL (ver 6.13.01.2872) or Intel (6.13.01.3196). But it was the tick box that finally fixed the problem!

Thanks DELL but it took me a while!!

Here's hoping this saves you some time :-)

Hi Folks,

I've just posted on another thread after having a similar problem. My solution is different so I'm adding it to the list.

It turned out my black screen after the XP loading screen was caused by the lap top lid switch being stuck down!

My screen was fine in safe mode, and when I hooked up to an exteranl mointor it was fine too, but otherwise the screen was blank because the laptop thought the lid was down! It was actually the internal switch that the little button near the hinge presses down on.

Hope it helps someone!

Thank you very much for posting this solution! I had this problem with my Dell Inspiron 2500 after I updated to XP service pack 2. It caused me to do a couple of clean reinstalls before I got a clue and googled the problem. Your suggestion solved my problem and saved me from wasting dozens of hours.

I tried everything listed above also and the lid switch fixed my problem.  Thanks.
