Black screen with mouse after log on

After logging in I just get a black screen and the cursor. Pressing ctrl-alt-del eventually allows me to open the task manager, but no programs can be run. After restoring the system to an earlier point I was able to successfully log in but after turning the computer off the problem returned.

Hi dashby94,

This seems to be an issue with residual power stored in the computer which at times does cause interference. We would have to go ahead and remove the residual power from the computer and then check for functionality.

To remove residual power follow the steps below:

  • Shut down the computer
  • Unplug the charger and remove the battery if its a laptop. If its a desktop, remove the main power cable from the back of the tower.
  • Press and hold the power button for 30 to 40 seconds and then let it go
  • Put the battery and connect the charger back in if its a laptop. In case of desktops, connect the main power cable at the back of the tower.
  • Power on the computer
Now let the computer boot into windows. If you are able to see anything on the screen then I believe your issue has been fixed. Restart the computer a couple of times to check thoroughly. If you are still facing the same issue then we need to run the diagnostics once.
To run the diagnostics,
  • Shut the computer down
  • As soon as you power on the computer, keep tapping the F12 key for 3 to 4 times
  • Select the option 'Diagnostics' on the Boot menu screen with the help of arrow keys on the keyboard and then press Enter.
Let the diagnostics run. It will take about 10 minutes at the maximum. In case of any error coming up please reply with the findings.
Awaiting for your reply.
