Blank Screen after boot screen.

I've got a friend's computer here with a messed up xp install. Booting into normal, safe mode, safe with command prompt, vga, last known good configuration doesn't have. When you boot, it seems fine, shows the boot screen. Once in windows, the screen is blank. Ive tried to use the restore disk but I get the same response when it tries to run it. It loads the blue install screen, but once it makes it to the part where you can use a mouse and everything, the screen turns blank again.

Safe Mode hangs booting after it reaches ndis.sys. The computer boots fine into my BartPE livecd.

The computer is a dell dimension 2350.

Does the hang at ndis.sys in safe mode point to a specific hardware item like a network (NIC) or wireless card? That may tell you where the problem is. If it's the NIC, you might want to try disabling it in BIOS or unplugging a wireless adaptor before you boot.
