Blue Stop Error Screen
Hello. I'm not sure if this is the correct section but any help would be great. I start my computer normally and login to my user name. After around 2 minutes, an error message appears followed by a bright blue screen with the following message:
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your comouter. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the drive or check with the manufactrurer for the driver updates. Try changing video adapters.
Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select advanced startup options, and then select safe mode,

Also, if you have a new video card, you might want to check that your driver is updated. Sometimes if you do a Windows update and your driver isn't updated as well, you can run into a conflict issue. Check your driver.

Jay_k,
You said this error occurred after you login. In that case see this link regarding the HaxDoor virus: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903251/en-us Note especially the "Message 2" under the Symptoms section.

Jay-k,
Since your system restarts within 1 minute of logon, you almost certainly have either an RPC bug or your system is set to automatically restart on a fatal error. If the restart is caused by a system failure, you can temporarily disable this in the following manner.
Click Start|Run. Type cmd. Press Enter. At the command prompt type:
wmic recoveros set AutoReboot = False
Automatic restart on system failure can be permanently turned off in the following manner:
Click Start. Right-click on My Computer. Left-click on Properties. Click on the Advanced tab. Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings. Under System Failure, uncheck the box next to Automatically Restart option. Apply changes. Hopefully, this will give you enough time to download/install needed updates.

Jay_k,
Oops, forgot to ask if you were running XP Home or XP Professional. WMIC not available in Windows XP Home. Only available in XP Pro and Server 2003.

Hi tony
I am using XP home edition. Is there any other way you can help. The latest software i had installed was norton antivirus 2006. Could that be a problem also?
Cheers

Jay_k,
If you suspect Norton 2006 as the culprit, I recommend that you totally uninstall the Norton 2006. Download/install AVG Free AntivVirus from www.free.grisoft.com. This will give you comparable protection; i.e., autoprotect and e-mail scanning, while you determine if removal of Norton 2006 stops the problem. I do know that Norton 2004 had a similar issue, but usually it would list the Norton Antivirus engine DLL in the stop error message. Hope this info helps.
