Blue screen when re-install windows XP on Optiplex 780

I have an Optiplex 780 USFF with Win7 64-bit system. I tried to replace the 64-bit OS with a Win XP since many program I am using is not supported by 64-bit OS. When I boot from the CD it gets as far as the Windows Setup "SETUP IS STARTING WINDOWS", then I get the blue screen with the following information:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove and newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Technical Information:

Stop: 0x0000007B (0xF78DA63C, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000).

Now I've scanned the hard drive and ran chkdsk and it shows no problems. Can some one help?

Thank you.

Thank you for your kind help on this.

I think I did do as you said without knowing it, when I set the BIOS parameters to default. That might have been what really cured me, but maybe I'll never really know if it was that or the OEM disk now.

Thanks, theflash

At work, we use MDT 2010 to deploy Windows and applications.  Some of the older machines we have are a mixture of Optiplex 740, 745, 755, and 760.  I haven't had a single problem deploying software to those machines until this specific one yesterday.

It's an Opt 740 and it says "enhanced" when I turned it ON.  This PC was booting up fine for an end-user but I wanted to reformat and reinstall it since it hasn't been reinstalled since 2008 and the PC was locking up from time to time.  I proceeded to use MDT to reinstall Windows XP, Office, etc.  After MDT reboots the machine, it gets to the Windows XP logo screen...stays there for a few seconds and then BSOD.  It then restarts and the cycle continues.

I went into the BIOS and there is ** NO ** ATA/AHCI set option anywhere.  I updated the BIOS to the latest one using a bootable Windows disk.  Still no ATA/AHCI set option.

One thing I did notice is that for SATA 0 (which is the HD), it says there's a password currently set.  It also stated that if I wanna reset it, I should reboot the machine and go into SYSTEM SETUP.  But I AM in system setup.

I am not sure if it's this password thing that's causing the BSOD though.

Help!

No ... XP is stupid that way.  It can only look for a driver on floppy.  If you don't have a floppy disk/drive, then you will need to use nLiteOS.com to integrate the driver into your installation files.

My xps Dell do not have a floppy drive so can these files be stored on a jump drive and be stored on the computer that way, after the F6 prompt appears? Please tell me

I was experiencing the same problem with a Optiplex 780 needing a system repair, and getting the BSOD. I went into setup and chose the 2nd option to use ATA, and no more BSOD and the repair completed and fixed the problem.

My question is, can I set it back to the original setting (SATA)? It warns me I may loose operability.

"My question is, can I set it back to the original setting (SATA)? It warns me I may loose operability."

Only with a registry hack.  You are much better off installing in AHCI mode, loading the appropriate driver at the appropriate time.

You have two easy choices: an XP 'Repair Install' or temporarily installing a third-party SATA card to bootstrap the system into Windows where the AHCI drivers can be installed.

Thanks it works. My system may differ from yours but it worked for me. I've been trying to reinstall the factory Windows 7 pro for a month after a power outrage. It wouldn't allow me. Kept getting unrecognized drivers and hanging on 0% expanding windows files...Optplex 3020 I changed the data operation to ATA and stopped the BSOD. Installed my Windows XP sp3. Good bye Takeover OS Windows 7 pro and all of its embedded stopping me from installing My preferred OS on My Machine that I Paid for to work without hassle. Just another note I had to use the keyboard when it was on the installing xp screen because I figure Dell machine with usb and not ps/2 ports has to wait til xp is on desktop to install the mouse. Thanks again...it was a lifesaver after the configuration nightmare.
