CD/DVD doesn't work: NEC DVD+-RW ND-6650A

My CD/DVD quit working. I searched the web for a driver. None to be found. I ended up at the firmware sites. When I tried to apply the firmware as a fix. I got the message:  Target NEC ND-6650A is not found correctly.

Here is how I got my CD/DVD working:

Click: Start
Click: Settings
Click: Control Panel
Click: Administration Tools
Click: Computer Management
Click: Device Manager
Click: Plus sign to left of: DVD/CD-ROM Drives
Right Click: _NEC DVD+-RW ND-6650A
Click: Uninstall
Click: OK
Look down a few lines.
Click: Plus sign to left of: IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
Right Click: Secondary IDE Channel
Click: Uninstall
Click: OK
Click: x in upper right corner to close the window.

Go to the address bar in your browser and type:

Click: Support
Click: Nero 7
Click: Utilities (it's on the left side of the webpage)
Click: Clean Tools
Click: Registry Checker and Drive Clean Tool

Read the directions......I did not need or use the Driver-CleanTool.
I only used the RegistryCheck tool.

Click: Download
Click: Save
Click: Save
Click: Open
Click: RegistryChecker.exe
Click: Extract All
Click: Next
Click: Next
Click: Finish

You may see a red circle over Driver-CleanTool.exe Don't worry about it. I did not use the tool.

Restart the computer.

After many headaches and much web searching, this worked for me. I hope it works for you.

The procedure for uninstalling the drive in the Windows Device Manager and then restarting is a well known and often used troubleshooting tool for drives.  You don't need to uninstall anything else.
There are other well documented and used fixes for drives such as the Upper/Lower filters that you didn't even note.

The Nero info you noted is ONLY for Nero users and may not be needed.

Firmware for most Dell provided drives must be obtained from Dell as they are OEM models.  Many of the retail firmware updates will not recognize OEM drives.

Finally, there are NO drivers for CD or DVD drives other than the built in Windows drivers.

It's nice that you were able to fix it on your own, however, had you come here first and posted your problem on the applicable CD/DVD section of the forum (e.g. if you have a Dimension desktop then the Dimension CD/DVD section) we could have saved you a lot of time and headaches resolving the easily fixed problem.
