CPU Performance - 100% Usage on Start-up
I have a 2 month old Dimension and after logging in as a user the CPU usage pegs out at 100%. I have looked at Task Manager and see that iexplorer seems to be using 97-98%.
Also have Norton AV, and personal firewall plus Aluria spyware.
The machine is still under the 90 day warranty........is this something Dell can help with or am I on my own?
My suspicion is a virus but always shows clean......and thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated

Hi.
Is the utilization constant? Or does it decrease after the bootup process?

hm.. I would download and install Ccleaner from www.filehippo.com and run it automaticly when Your computer starts. Have You tried the Autoruns v8.5 tool from www.sysinternals.com to check Your startup files?

You also can try the "netsh winsock reset" in a CMD window.
Note that if you have eg. Google desktop search installed You may have to reinstall that application again.

Most of the sites I've looked at say this is either a trojan, worm, spyware etc. The process under task manager should be IEXPLORE.EXE not iexplorer

Try running Microsoft® Windows® Malicious Software Removal Tool (KB890830)

Thanks for the help.........i tried last night to download the MS malicious removal but Explorer crashs in the middle of the download. My guess is that I will need to download this to a disk and run from the disk.
Would the virus/worm be causing Explorer to crash or is it too much CPU usage caused by the virus/worm?
Thanks again

Run these online scans. Take a note of the names of any nasties found and let them fix everything

Like Dunedin says, I would run the online scanners he mentions ( I've found the Trend Micro Housecall to be quite good) Another good (free) download from Trend Micro is http://www.trendmicro.com/cwshredder/
Try disabling the iexplorer process in task manager to see if you can download the MS malicious software removal tool (you can run this online as well). Would be worthwhile downloading MS Windows Defender (Beta) and trying it out.

Some more info on the virus/trojan/worm etc. here. Some versions of it will definitely slow your pc down.

Try safe mode with networking, connect to Trend Micro Housecall and run it from there. It should work, I've just run it this way. You could try downloading and running the other antivirus/spyware removers mentioned already. Good luck

Thanks for the tip on safe mode..........this worked and I was able to run all of the virus and spyware scans. Spyware scans found a few items. I then went into the system registry to look for an "Iexplorer" reference and found nothing.
Rebooted and same situation.
Any additional thoughts or suggestions?
Again thanks for any and all suggestions.
