Can Not Create a CD-RW on Roxio Easy CD Creater
I cant seem to create a CD-RW using Roxio CD Creator Basic that came with my Inspiron 4100. I have no problem copying whole disks on a CD-R and moving files to a CD-R, but I would like to put files on a CD that I can periodically change/add/delete (similar to a Zip disk).
I open the Easy Creator and try to create a project. I add the files, Click Record. It looks as though it is working, but takes alot of time spinning and then the following box comes up
"Insert a blank CD with enough free space to record the project".
The files I have chosen are only a few KB and the disk is empty so I know there is enough room. What am I doing wrong? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

You have to use Direct CD to copy files if the CD is formatted.
Make sure you have your Roxio version updated. Go to Roxio.com and look for "Software Updates" for your version.
I also found using "Drag to Disk"(EZCD 6) and "Direct CD" on the same CD/RW ROM disk so many times, the disk becomes unusable.(As little as 10, even when attempting to erase it, it just locks up my computer) So I use CD/R's for Drag to disk.
I use "Make a data CD" with CD/RW's. When I'm done, I erase, and start over. I test them to make sure they are still readable.
Try a different brand of CD/RW's if you can't copy data to it.

If you want to use the CD-RW similiar to a Zip disk, you're going about it the wrong way. You don't create a project and then burn it. You want to use DirectCD (or Drag-To-Disk, depending on your version), format the disk, and then just copy the files to the CD-RW, just like a zip disk.
It sounds like the error you're receiving is due to the fact you're trying to write a project to a CD-RW that's been formated with DirectCD. Since the disk isn't blank (it's been formatted) Roxio is telling you to insert a blank one.
My experience with Memorex CD-RW's is the same as msil217's. Very bad.

I have just updated my Easy Creator software, but still cannot make CD-RW discs. If I choose Direct CD, I get a Incompatible Media message and and can not do anything else. If I choose the Easy Creator option, add the files I want to copy, and try to Record, I get the following message.
"Easy CD Creator had detected that there were errors during the recording or that there are errors on your CD." (It is a brand new disc. I even tried a second new disc.) Another message: "The disc in the recorder is not the proper media for this project. Insert a blank CD or a CD with enough space to record your project."
I am using an Imation CD-RW 4x-10x high speed ReWritable CD. Is this the wrong kind of CD?
Dell tells me that my drive can RW. Please help.

Kasey6465,
You didn't state which Model CDRW drive is installed in your system. So I am guessing. If it
is a 4x rewrite drive, you are limited to 4x CDRW disks only. It it is a 10X rewrite drive,
you can use 10x or 4x-10x CDRW media. Try some 4x only disks or tell us the Model of your CDRW
drive and we can verify your capabilities without guessing. Not all CDRW drives or the media
are equal.

The "8X" is the CD-R maximum write speed. The "4X" is the CD-RW (rewriteable) maximum speed. The "24X" is the maximum data read speed.
You should not use RW discs that are "high speed". 10X discs are usually rated as "high speed" RW discs.
Along with everything else that has been presented, the reliability of RW discs should be taken into consideration in their use. RW discs are known to lose format and or data. For that reason, always have the data backed up someplace else, do not have your "only copy" of data on an RW disc.

Many thanks for the information. Now I understand what the probem is. If I upgraded to the "full" version of the Roxio CD Creator, will that make any difference? Or in light of the "unstability" of the CD-RW's, should I just stay with the CD-R's?
I also have a 250 MG zip drive that I use to back up all my documents. Maybe that is a better medium to use.............

Upgrading to the full version (Platinum) of Easy CD Creator will make no difference in reliability
or quality writing to CDR or CDRW disks. Upgrading will allow more options and capabilities. CDR
disks are inexpensive, especially when purchased on sale with rebates. My average cost of brand
name CDR disk is less than $.10 each. Than makes then disposable for me. If you still want to use
CDRW disks, stay with 4x speeds only. Also, avoid Memorex brand as they are generally troublesome.
I have become partial to TDK for both CDR and CDRW disks over the years.
I also have a ZIP 250 and like it for back-ups. Be gentle with a ZIP disk as they can be damaged
if dropped.
