Can't Install Java?!

When I try to install java, a window pops up called "Windows Installer,"  says "This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can  access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer Package."

I'm new to this forum and i'm not really sure if I'm in the right place or what to do with the problem right now.

Jagged Link,

What version of Java are you trying to install (and from what source)?

I believe it's Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0 Update 6 and I think it's from Sun Microsystems.

Jagged Link,

Are you attempting to install JRE from the Sun site or downloading the file and installing it from your hard disk? Whichever has failed to date, try the other and see if it will install properly.
